Pinecrest Knocks It Out of the Park

The Pinecrest Parks and Recreation Department is adding facilities, amenities and activities this year, so it's worth paying attention.

Matzner Park is going to take shape, as the contract for landscape architecture was awarded, and the Village Manager authorized a partnership with Fairchild Botanical Gardens to begin cultivation of native orchids on the property.

Later this month, Pinecrest will close on the purchase of a 5-acre property at the corner of 60 AVE and 120 ST to create Aleyda Mas Park. The park comes stocked with beautiful, mature trees, a lagoon and a house which will host activities for our vibrant community, as well as enough room for plenty of open space for outdoor fun.

A "Chalk Walk" was installed at Evelyn Greer Park for our budding artists.

Councilmember Abbott has begun teaching a spinning class each month at the Community Center gym. I hear the playlist is outstanding. It fills up fast, so don't dawdle if you want a spot.

Over 100 residents aged 80 and older attended our Pinecrest Pioneer luncheon last month. We host them each June and December, so if you or someone you know is going to age into the festivities, please let us know.

The annual Daddy-Daughter Dance is scheduled for February 9. You and your "special date" will enjoy a memorable evening together, including music, light refreshments, and a photo booth capturing the moment forever.

And Rob Mattes, our Parks and Recreation Director, is doing all of this while operating at a 96% cost recovery rate this fiscal year.

To keep up to date with all of the goings on, I urge you to subscribe to the Pinecrest Parks and recreation e-newsletter.

Fertilizers may be applied at this time of the year. Even so, please think twice before you put that crud in your yard. The nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizers washes into Biscayne Bay, where it damages the water quality, makes it difficult for aquatic plants to grow and destroys coral reefs and fish populations. Do the bay a favor and skip the fertilizer if you can. If you can't skip it all together, apply less and apply it on days when it will not rain and you will not use your sprinklers.
