Sea Change Newsletter

September 2026

The 2026 election season is underway, and Alaska voters will soon decide who will represent them as Governor, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senator. Following the primary election, the candidates advancing to the November 3 general election have been identified.

Earlier this month, candidates had the opportunity to discuss issues facing Alaska’s fishing communities during the Alaska Fisheries Debates in Kodiak. We hope you tuned in and listened to what participants had to say! If you missed the live debates, recordings are available here.

Alaska’s fisheries are an important part of this year’s election conversation. As Alaskans, commercial fishermen, and coastal community members, we encourage you to learn where candidates stand on fisheries issues as you develop your voting plan for the November 3 general election.

The Arctic Report Card Finds New Support

For 20 years, NOAA has published an annual report synthesizing Arctic environmental research. In August 2026, the Trump Administration announced it would no longer fund this critical report. The American Geophysical Union later announced it would take over management of the publication, with support from several partners.

Although the report will continue to be published, the loss of federal support underscores the importance of maintaining environmental monitoring programs as conditions in the Arctic continue to change.

What NOAA's New Fisheries Reform Priorities Could Mean for Alaska

NOAA Fisheries recently announced a national set of priorities aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of American seafood. The initiative responds to a 2025 executive order and focuses on increasing domestic seafood production, reducing regulatory burdens, modernizing fisheries science, and supporting fishing businesses and communities.

This announcement sets NOAA’s overall direction but does not change specific Alaska fishing regulations. Stakeholders across the fishing industry will play an important role in shaping how these national priorities are applied.

New Resource: QuickBooks for Seafood Harvesters

Local Catch Network has launched a hands-on workshop this fall designed specifically for those managing the financial records of commercial fishing and aquaculture operations. The workshop will begin with four recorded prep sessions that went live this week, followed by a live webinar in late 2026.

Participants will work through seafood business examples and exercises in QuickBooks, gaining skills they can apply directly to their own businesses.

Upwelling: Nutrient-Dense Information for Our Marine Community takes a deeper dive into topics and issues impacting Alaska fisheries, coastal communities, and the marine environment, providing the context and background often missing from the conversation. This month we covered the importance of Alaska’s ferry system to coastal communities and the outcomes of fisheries bills considered during the 34th Alaska Legislature.
