Time to give thanks, friends —
Don't miss our Special T-day programming on NCPR to celebrate (and aid you on your journey through) Thanksgiving and remember all the wonderful things, lest ye forget how thankful ye... uh... thou... thee?... are.
Here are some (but not necessarily all) of the things I am thankful for.
I'm thankful for the extra, full tube of toothpaste in the bathroom closet. It's handy when the one I've been using daily finally empties and it surprises me even though I knew the day would come since the moment I opened it.
I'm thankful for a dog who's too old to run away. Does she wander? You bet. Can she wander far? Not without having a heart attack. This makes dog retrieval much easier when letting her out into the cold night right before bed.
I like seasons. Some more than others. So I'm thankful for some seasons.
Pie. I like pie. I have a high degree of pumpkin pie gratitude.
Shoe glue has been handy for me lately. It seems many of my boots and shoes have come to the same point in life my dog has, and all at the same time. Shoe glue has saved my sole. Thanks, shoe glue (brand name deliberately withheld for personal — not professional — reasons).
I think I'm thankful for family. I'll let you know for sure after the holiday.
One must always be thankful for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land upon which we tread. So yeah, sure. That, I guess.
I'd be thankful for hair, but that's not going so well these days. What I'm really thankful for is hats.
In the quietest moments, when the breeze is so slight that it makes not even the tiniest whistle as it passes through the frozen pines, and the weight of a single snowflake seems heavy as it lands on the crispy dead leaves left behind by a long, dry autumn and left even further behind by a long, hot summer and a rich, budding spring, and the chill of the coming winter kisses my face and ears and sneaks through the zipper of my jacket and buttonholes of my shirt, I am thankful to be able to go indoors and sit in a comfy chair in a heated room and listen to very loud music playing on very large speakers. If I had to stand outside in the freezing cold and hear the noise of all the crazy thoughts in my head, I'd never make it to April without losing my mind.
But honestly and in all sincerity, the gang and I here at NCPR are all thankful for you, friends. Thankful that you read to the bottom. Thankful that you listen to the end. Thankful that you stick with us. Thankful for your kind and generous support. Thankful for the opportunity to keep sending you emails and making you radio and sharing your stories and your world with you and doing all the things you love about NCPR. For real.
The NCPR Daily, Northern Light, and Story of the Day will all be off for the Thanksgiving holiday. But we'll see you again when it's over. Until then, here's the news, friends. Thanks! — Bill Haenel, NCPR
