Moving Forward by Opening New Doors
|
GRAHAM LAKE - In the heart of Front of Yonge Township, a story of entrepreneurial spirit and exceptional community commitment exists. If you believe in karma, good things find their way back around, and it’s come full circle on Graham Lake Road.
Chris and Cindy Birt, the duo behind Leading Edge Overhead Doors, have built a thriving business specializing in the installation, supply, and service of commercial and residential overhead doors. In the early days, Chris recalls his experience with Leeds Grenville Small Business resources, “Yes, I know Jeanette (Johnston), she helped me a tremendous amount when I was setting things up,” he said. “There’s so much to know.” Flash-forward and the company is prepping to mark 10 years in business. Their journey reflects a blend of hard work, quality craftsmanship, and community involvement.
Chris, with family exposure to the construction industry and over 16 years of experience in customer service and management, had a vision. Recognizing the potential for growth in the overhead door industry, he took the leap into entrepreneurship in 2015. “I suppose, I am an old soul,” Chris muses, attributing his business smarts to a deep understanding of trust and relationships.
Leading Edge Overhead Doors has been defined by its commitment to exceptional service, regardless of the job size. The company prides itself on delivering high-quality workmanship, a principle that has earned them a very loyal clientele. Chris emphasizes the importance of creating boundaries in business, advising new entrepreneurs to establish these early on.
Much credit goes to networking for spreading the word about Leading Edge, says Chris, “I started with Ontario Approved Professionals from the beginning and can’t count the number of referrals, there are so many.” The success of the business is also attributed to their exceptional team. Installer Steven Kennedy, who has been with the company for three years, appreciates the family-like atmosphere fostered by the Birts. “They trust us to represent the business in the community, allowing us to work independently,” says Steven. This contributes to their high standard of integrity and quality.
Cindy joined Chris full-time, transitioning from a career in healthcare to take on the growing and vital administrative responsibilities. Working together from their home office, the couple has cultivated a supportive environment, working closely with vendors to provide top-quality overhead doors. Supplying commercial and institutional door and window protection to hallway control, boathouse solutions and customizable rolling doors with high speed options, they literally have their clients securely covered.
The couple’s philosophy extends beyond the business, embracing their role in the community. In their third year, they began sponsoring local youth sports. Today, they support various initiatives, from cart racing to arts programs. “We feel fortunate to help out, especially those connected to youth development,” Chris shares.
Chris and Cindy are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. They plan to expand their reach into new areas while maintaining their reputation for quick service and customer care. With a steady hand, they navigate the challenges of ownership, knowing that the journey is ongoing. Together, the Birts continue to embody the spirit of a successful business; where quality, trust, and community come together, ensuring the business remains a cornerstone of the region for years to come.

Elizabethtown-Kitley Business Awards Recognize Things Great and Small
|
Two businesses were honoured this year with the Elizabethtown-Kitley Business of the Year Award. Danae O’Neill, Clinic Manager, accepted the award on behalf of Seaway Veterinary Clinic, while Lacey Lalonde received the recognition for Thrifty’s. Both awards were presented at the Elizabethtown-Kitley Township Economic Development Committee’s annual breakfast, held on October 25th at the Brockville Country Club.
In their acceptance speeches, both recipients spoke to the vital role the community plays in their business operations. “This community is beautiful,” Lacey remarked, emphasizing the importance of offering quality clothing and home goods at affordable prices amidst the rising cost of living. Thrifty’s, a not-for-profit second-hand store, directs its profits to support Heritage Christian Community School and participates in various local outreach initiatives.
Danae O'Neill expressed similar sentiments, highlighting Seaway Veterinary Clinic’s commitment to compassionate, community-centered animal care. “Our goal is to provide support to people within the community where they are, which is why being locally owned and operated is so important,” she said. Seaway Veterinary Clinic is known for its specialized care for a range of pets, including dogs, cats, birds, and other exotic animals.
Elizabethtown-Kitley Mayor Brant Burrow and MPP Steve Clark were among the notable attendees. Steve Duff, Chief Economist for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Agri-business, served as the guest speaker, providing valuable insights into agricultural economics within the Township and the Counties.
