OK, first, my apologies for the typo/auto-correct error in last night's email. We did not sail 60 miles in "two" hours; we did sail 60 miles in "ten" hours.
All day today, Tazzarin has been tied to the dock here at the marina in Lewisporte, Newfoundland. It was a very important crew change day. JJ Jaques, who has been with me for two weeks, disembarked today. His wife, Becky, flew up with Annie and all four of us met at the marina in the early afternoon. It was the first time I have seen Annie in about two months! I am so looking forward to cruising with her from here south to St. John's.
JJ and I hugged farewell on the dock. He has been an ideal shipmate. He is proactive about everything on the boat. He has many seagoing miles in his sailing past. He is always thoughtful about the boat. I do appreciate that! He is also a creative cook. Above all, he has an easy demeanor, sense of humor and is always enjoyable. He was aboard for the longest stretch of any of my visiting crew, covering Nunatsiavut, Labrador and Newfoundland. He is now spending a few days ashore here with Becky.
Today also involved a little boat cleaning and housekeeping, fueling and an attempt at groceries. Finding good groceries was always tough in Labrador; fresh vegetables, fruits and meats are nonexistent. We had hoped for a better grocer here in Lewisporte. However, most stores were closed in honor of Lewisporte Day and the Mussel Bed Soiree. So, only Paul's Value Grocer was open, marginally better than a convenience store. Annie and I will need to look for more in the outports we visit.
One windfall in the grocery department occurred this evening when a local boat came into the marina. They had a little trouble docking and lost a boathook overboard. I ran over to assist and also managed to retrieve their boathook. Ten minutes later the boat owner and his wife came over and handed me a bag with four fresh cod fillets! They had been out to catch their allotment of cod. They, in true Newfoundland hospitality, would accept nothing in return. These are the best people in the world!
