Success Story: Robert C, From English Major to Manufacturing

A member of the August 2024 training cohort, Robert Cleveland, didn’t always see himself in the manufacturing industry. “I started in English and Communications, then moved into music publicity and PR,” he explains. “Machining was a complete pivot for me, but it just made sense. I grew up playing instruments, and machining feels similar—repetitive inputs, honing skills. When I find something that clicks, I don’t mind doing it to where I lose track of time.”

Robert first heard about the program through a Reddit thread a friend shared, mentioning

"tuition-free machining." Intrigued, he explored the program, inspired by his family background in trades; his father is a carpenter, and his uncle is a machinist. Robert was ready to develop hands-on skills that would open doors in new fields.

Exploring Opportunities: MANUFACTURING 2000

Trainees Visit JATCO and Sits-Down with Aerotech

New Century Careers recently organized an exciting lineup of opportunities for our MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) trainees, designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and hands-on career exploration. In the spirit of preparing trainees for real-world roles in manufacturing, they participated in a tour of JATCO Machine & Tool Company and later attended an informative session with Aerotech, both events providing critical insights into potential career paths.

During the JATCO tour, trainees gained firsthand exposure to the dynamic operations of a full-scale machine and tool manufacturing company. This experience allowed them to see advanced machining in action, observe various roles within the industry, and understand the skills employers are looking for in a competitive workforce. Engaging directly with JATCO professionals, trainees were able to discuss current job openings, learn about JATCO’s commitment to quality and innovation, and explore the possibility of future employment with the company.

The learning continued back at the New Century Careers’ South Side training center with a special information session led by Aerotech. Known for its precision motion control and automation solutions, Aerotech shared invaluable industry insights, including their technological advancements and the type of skillsets they value in employees. This session allowed trainees to hear directly from industry leaders, ask questions, and consider how they could contribute to a high-tech company like Aerotech.

These events are part of New Century Careers’ ongoing commitment to connect our M2K trainees with meaningful employment pathways, and we are grateful to JATCO and Aerotech for helping make these experiences possible. We’re excited to see our trainees apply their knowledge and grow through interactions with leading companies in the manufacturing field!
