The Journey to Yorba Linda

In 1973, Union Pacific caboose, CA3 #25037 traveled to Yorba Linda

"Never to ride the rails again"

Faded Memories #12

The News Tribune and old photos give insight as to how

our caboose made its journey to Yorba Linda.

The Long-Awaited Caboose

Our Union Pacific caboose was manufactured by the Vernon Company in 1941. It traveled by rail from Union Pacific-Mira Loma to nearby Atwood. Seven hours of preparation for the trip to Yorba Linda began by removing the wheels, also known as “trucks”, which weighed four tons.

The Final Journey from Mira Loma

As an over-dimensional wide load, the caboose weighed approximately 17 tons without its wheels. It was hoisted onto a lowboy trailer via a 60-ton crane. The caboose and "trucks" traveled along Rose Drive to Imperial Highway. Photos document the route of days gone by. The short trip, including unloading, lasted four and a half hours.

Caboose, a Look-out for the Train

Early trains ran on wheels called "trucks" that included a journal box, also known as an oil box. The boxes often ran dry of oil and would begin to smoke. The caboose allowed the crew to quickly see the smoke and react. When smoke was spotted, a crew member would signal with a short blast of the horn and two longer blasts. The train would stop at the next station and the journal boxes would be filled with oil and rags to slow the leakage of oil.

With wheels removed, the caboose is lifted by crane onto a lowboy trailer.

Reader Question: Can you identify this intersection?

The Caboose approaches the Pacific Electric Train Depot on Imperial Highway. To the left is the old Chevron gas station and Yorba Linda Bowl. On the right, the Yorba Linda Station Shops had not been built.

The caboose reaches its final destination, next to the Pacific Electric Depot. In the far upper left, you can see the Ultra Mar Gas Station and the Old Yorba Linda Public Library, now the home of In-N-Out.

Hedge Fund Money and Development

Big developers and big money – hedge fund money are behind all these pieces of land development and affordable housing legislation. The bottom line in all of it is to REMOVE LOCAL ZONING IN EVERY CITY IN CALIFORNIA.

Refin and Zillow with Amazon and Microsoft

If you take the time to do the research – two of the sponsors and donors of this legislation are Refin and Zillow – hedge funds – with Amazon and Microsoft cofounders at the helm. 25% - THAT is ONE QUARTER of EVERY residential property IN AMERICA is NOW owned by hedge funds. Look it up.

C.A.R. Sues Six Cities

The CA Association of Realtors is the entity – NOT THE STATE – who WON the lawsuits against 6 cities who fought this at the beginning before SB 423 was “a thing”. WHY did CA Association of Realtors – NOT The state have standing in this case?

Crickets from the Mayor

When these cities bore the brunt of comprehension of this lawsuit others – like Yorba Linda – hit the brakes and complied in whatever way they could without getting fined or sued. That’s not to say – and I asked Mayor Gene Hernandez – “Why don’t you mayors statewide get together and stand united in front of cameras and lay the blame on the contributors to these pieces of legislation – hedge funds and the CA Association of Realtors!” I got crickets for an answer.

Massive Apartment Dwellings Promoted

Recently, the various major news outlets in LA have promoted the idea of renting in their nightly “news”. They are trolling the “idea” of massive density apartment dwellings. If you say it enough, people will begin to believe it. These hedge funds have generational wealth at this point. It would take you 10 lifetimes to come up with the out of reach money they have.

Backroom Deals and Corruption

So, all this blame red vs blue – is useless. Backroom deals and corruption are rampant and then sold on our media to have us fighting amongst ourselves which is the LAST thing we should be doing.

Charter School to be Considered

Vote for approval is on August 8

PYLUSD school board meeting, August 8

1301 E Orangethorpe Ave, Placentia, 6pm

Opinion

The Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) will consider establishing a charter school at their meeting on August 8. The purpose of the hearing is to determine the level of interest by parents, teachers and other employees.  In California, the process of establishing a charter school begins with a petition signed by parents and teachers.

Some residents favor charter schools as they loosen the red tape and allow educators to be more innovative. A recent study by Stanford University showed an upward trend in performance of charter schools, with reading and math scores outpacing their peers in traditional public schools.

Greatest Issue- Classroom and Facility Space

The greatest issue to be addressed is classroom and facility space. Since PYLUSD has had a drop in enrollment of 25,741 students in 2017-2018 to 23,138 in 2022-23, space could be available. However, ideally space would be leased for the charter school.

A Prior Request Failed

In April 2023, a request for a charter school was made by Orange County Classical Academy requesting classroom space and facilities. However, it was never presented to the school board because a petition against the school gathered 1100 signatures.

Would Begin in 2024-25

If approved, the transitional kindergarten through 8th grade would be implemented in phases beginning with students through the fifth grade in 2024-25. One grade level would be added each year through 2027-28. In 2024-25 enrollment would be at 340 students and 500 by 2030.

Mission Statement

The mission statement of tuition-free charter schools which provides "unbiased instruction with traditional vales"" is to "inspire and empower the next generation of California's leaders to excel academically, to be proud Americans and Californians and to impact the world with excellence derived from an education like that which produced the inspired servant leaders who founded our great nation." Students are called "scholars".

What is a Charter School?

*Tuition free

*Publicly funded

*Any student can enroll

*Must serve all students including special needs and those learning English

*Students must take state tests including Common Core

*In California, it must be non-religious and non-profit

*Teachers must be certified

*80% of teachers are usually non-union

*Independently operated with its own appointed board of directors

*Overseen by the school district or office of education

*Administration must prepare same reports as in a traditional system

*A charter school must be renewed every few years

Recent Changes Made to PYLUSD Upper Staff

Since the election to the school board of three grass roots candidates in 2022 and 2022, Shawn Youngblood, Leandra Blades and Todd Frazier, several upper level staff changes have been made recently through resignations and upcoming retirement. These changes could bring a new atmosphere to PYLUSD that some feel is long overdue.

CA Dilemma, the Short List

Opinion

*Two insurance giants, State Farm and All State, are no longer writing homeowner policies for new homes.

*The public is pushed to add solar and buy electric vehicles.

*Four CA dams are set to be removed and water levels are kept low forcing our state to buy electricity from other states. Brown-outs and black-outs are predicted by Edison.

*Colorado River and other water sources are forced to cut allotments that CA depends on.

*Our state refuses to increase water storage, dumps large amounts of precious water in the ocean and then cries drought!

*Mismanagement of our forests leads to catastrophic wildfires.

*New homes can no longer be equipped with gas.

*Regulations constantly increase, hurting businesses.

*Greenhouse emissions are strictly controlled for businesses while wildfires blow the roof off the scale.

*Water infrastructure improvement has not occurred in over 50 years.

*Mandatory, taxpayer-funded affordable housing continues at an estimated cost of $1 million per unit.

*Ocean pollution due to sewage leaks, poor infrastructure, litter, fire remnants, etc.

How to Remove Skunk Smells-Opinion

From a post on Facebook

________________________________

The best way we’ve found to remove the smell of skunk is:

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide,

1 tablespoon dish soap

1/4 cup baking soda

Sponge

Put first two in bowl, have the stinky one ready in sink and just before you sponge the mixture on add baking soda. Be VERY careful not to get it in nose or eyes. Massage through hair. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. Use your regular soap, rinse, dry. You literally can let them sleep on your bed after with no issues.
