CHPC Hosts International Peacemakers
This week, two international peacemakers with PC(USA)’s Presbyterian Peacemaking Program will be with us. Noemi Sanchez has been a member of the Calvinist Reformed Church of El Salvador (IRCES) for approximately 30 years. The Rev. Leslie Vogel has served as a PC(USA) mission coworker in Guatemala since 2013 and as regional liaison for Guatemala and Mexico since 2018.
International Peacemakers’ purpose is to lift up issues of peace and justice around the world. This year, the focus is on PC(USA)’s Matthew 25 Invitation to dismantle structural racism, eradicate systemic poverty, build congregational vitality, and address intersectional issues, such as climate change, militarism, and heteropatriarchy/gender justice.
We are grateful to Perry Chang and Soni Castleberry for coordinating the visit and to Claudia Foulkes for hosting the women in her home.
This is a great opportunity to socialize and learn. Please join in as you can:
--Sat., Sept. 16, 11:30 a.m. – Carrie Bridgman will bring Noemi and Leslie to El Tarasco, 110 Fairfax Ave., for lunch with CHPCers who often gather there on Saturday mornings. Dine at your expense, learn about peacemaking work in El Salvador and Guatemala, and maybe practice Spanish. (Leslie has not been directly involved with our Guatemalan Connection with the Estoreno Presbytery but is familiar with it and the area where we visit.) No RSVP needed, just show up.
--Monday, Sept. 18, 11:30 a.m. – Soni and Brad Castleberry will host brunch at their condo, 209 Fairfax Ave. #1, for our Central American guests and eight more persons. There will be a Powerpoint presentation by the guests. Call Soni at 502-417-6481 to RSVP.
--Tuesday, Sept. 19 – Claudia, Perry, and Soni will have breakfast with Noemi and Leslie at 9:30 a.m. at Con Huevos, 2339 Frankfort Ave. RSVP to Soni by noon Monday so she can let the restaurant know if you want to BYOB (buy your own breakfast) and join the informal conversation. There also may be opportunities for sightseeing, hanging out, dinner, or a Louisville Bats game at 6:30 p.m. Let Soni know if you want to plan something that day or meet up if something else happens.
--Wednesday, Sept. 20, evening meal – Plans are yet to be determined, but you are invited to be a part. Let Soni know if this is a good night for you.
--Thursday, Sept. 21, 11:15 a.m. – This will be our last time to be with Noemi and Leslie. We will meet at Payne St. Bakehouse, 255 Spring St. Beverages and food are on your own. Please RSVP to Soni by Monday, Sept. 18.
