2026 New Jersey Envirothon

Student Environmental Achievement

and a Conservation Legacy

Nearly twenty years after earning Second Place at the New Jersey Envirothon hosted at the Lighthouse Center for Natural Resource Education, a new generation of students from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) returned to the same shoreline campus — this time capturing the 2026 state championship title. Hosted by the Ocean County Soil Conservation District, the 2026 NJ Envirothon brought together students, educators, conservation professionals, and community leaders to celebrate environmental learning and stewardship. Read the full story on our Blog about MATES’ remarkable full-circle moment and the lasting legacy of the Lighthouse Center and the individuals whose vision helped shape generations of environmental leaders.

From Student to Staff - Welcoming

Danella Funk to the OCSCD Team!

When Danella Funk enrolled in Principles of Soil Science at Kean University, she discovered more than just an academic interest—she found a career path. Through hands-on field experiences, guest speakers, and an educational field trip with the Ocean County Soil Conservation District (OCSCD), Danella gained firsthand exposure to soil conservation and erosion control practices.

Inspired by what she learned, Danella completed an internship with OCSCD from January through May 2026, where she worked alongside District staff conducting site inspections, reviewing plans, and learning about New Jersey's Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Standards. Her internship became the focus of a Field Studies research project at Kean University and ultimately led to her hiring as a full-time Inspector I with OCSCD.
