Don't Let 'Perfect Polly'

Ruin Your Checkride

by David St George

SAFE Executive Director

Unfortunately, many flight test candidates ruin their performance on flight tests with self-defeating criticism of their own performance (guilty). As soon as a few minor errors occur, many applicants are crushed – psychologically and start to give up! It is critical for test success to remember,”stuff happens” in all flying. The goal in flight testing – and flying – is to always be correcting back to a high standard, but as the FAA says in the ACS "Perfection is not the standard!"

Subsequent reflection (after action) is an important pilot trait, but in the heat of battle, don’t let that “Perfect Polly” ruin your flying. Your DPE is required to inform you when a maneuver is unsuccessful. If you hear nothing, suck it up and keep flying. Remember, a maneuver may not meet *your* standard – it is test day, after all, and you’re nervous – but the FAA test is pass/fail. Read more.

What Are The Top 9 Avoidable But

Expensive Airplane Insurance Claims?

The AOPA Air Safety Institute recently examined insurance claims and found five leading costly and completely avoidable insurance claims that occur even before takeoff. Many of these are a result of poor or inadequate instruction. This free 2:30 minute video details those.

What's an 'avoidable' ground insurance claim? They're mostly simple mistakes that any pilot can make.but CFIs too often fail to emphasize. The top five ground mistakes include:

  • tow bar attached at engine start
  • taxiing into a light pole, building or another aircraft
  • hitting the rear wall of the hangar when backing in
  • letting a ladder or other object fall on a hangared airplane
  • lack of cognizance of your prop blast on the ground

Among the more serious accidents that ASI deemed avoidable, the top four were

NOTAM Reform!

SAFE-Supported NOTAM Reform Effort, Decades In The Making, May Finally Succeed. Yes, This Year!

Project Completion Set For July, Full Operational Status By September, FAA Says

NOTAMS - for decades plagued by sheer volume and until recent years by an extraordinarily cumbersome delivery system - may be improved by July of this year. Or maybe September for full service, says the FAA.

"It's been at least the last 50 years that pilots have been complaining about the bulkiness and general unuseability of the NOTAM system," said David St George, SAFE Executive Director. SAFE and several other GA alphabet organizations have been pushing NOTAM reform for several years.

Problems with the NOTAM system itself date from at least the 1960s, when airmen got NOTAMS from the nearest Flight Service Station or consulted the biweekly paperback FAA Airport Directory (now the Chart Supplement). Today, pilot eyes tend to glaze over when confronted with seemingly endless pages of small print scrolling on the computer screen.

The FAA says it is accelerating NOTAM reform using new vendor CGI Federal, a internet service company. CFI Federal was described in an FAA press release as a "streamlined, innovative vendor" that could deliver the new NOTAM service by July with operational status in September.

The data will be hosted in the cloud with a scaleable and resilient architecture, DOT Secretary Sean Duffy said, adding "It's time our technology enters the 21st century."

Until the updated technology is installed, NOTAMs are always available on the FAA's NOTAM page.

You Need The (FREE) SAFE Toolkit!

The free SAFE Toolkit has virtually everything needed by professional CFIs (or pilots), including endorsements, experience required and test codes. Fresh weekly articles and free resources

The tab for SAFE's Check-Ride Ready™ provides DPE tips to make sure every applicant is fully prepared for their evaluation.

Download the free SAFE Toolkit and stay up to date; "We are here to help!," declared St. George. "ALL we 'sell' is safety!"

Set SAFE as a home page (working on it): <http://safepilots.org>

or get the FREE "SAFE Toolkit" App <http://bit.ly/SAFEtoolkit>

Or better yet, both. They're free for all CFIs, not just SAFE members.

SAFE Members In The News

Joey Keahey

MCFI

Master Instructors is pleased to welcome Joey Keahey of Hampton, Georgia to the Community of Master Instructors with his First Designation as a Master CFI. Joey says: “I learned to fly at a grass strip runway located on the family's farm in Hampton. As a pilot for more than 30 years and an instructor for 25 years, I have been fortunate to have flown many different aircraft, including tailwheel airplanes like the Piper J3 Cub, seaplanes, helicopters, and jets..I have always enjoyed learning new things. But little did I know the profound impact I would make on others. Being of service to others and contributing to their success, at least in some small way, is what motivates me to do more.”

Jean-Michel Karr

MCFI

Master Instructors is honored to announce that Jean-Michel Karr of Chêne-Bougeries, Switzerland has received his Second Accreditation as a Master Instructor. Jean-Michel is an ATP/CFI/CFII AGI/IGI and EASA flight and instrument examiner FE-IRE-CRE(A) and FI-IRI-CRI(A) instructor. He has been an active instructor since 2006 and works pro bono as Head of Training in a non-commercial flight school in Geneva, Switzerland. His areas of focus are environmental moderation in flight with the usage of approved simulators, low-carbon aircraft, and the Pipistrel Velis Electro. He also bridges the transatlantic gap by helping pilots convert or make the most of their FAA certificates and EASA licenses. With a background in software engineering, design and quality, Jean-Michel has primarily dedicated a quarter of century to public service in his Geneva community.

Christopher Baye

Florida homeowners may be able to shoot down drones that get within 500 feet of their property, according to Florida Senate Bill 1422, although the FAA would likely arrest them. Since FAA owns the airspace, this bill pits the state against Federal law.
