Everyone deserves a place to call home.

A Word from Rebecca

On Sept. 18, I had the honor of participating on a panel discussion with U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Maine Gov. Janet Mills. The event was organized to announce Maine's new Home Electrification and Appliances Rebates (HEAR) program, which is funded by a $36 million federal grant supported by the Inflation Reduction Act.

One of the exciting aspects of the program is that it will make it more feasible for affordable housing developers to incorporate clean energy and energy-efficient features into new construction. These features will improve indoor air quality and enhance climate control for our residents, decrease the carbon footprint of housing, and reduce energy costs when paired with sustainable building design or renewable energy features.

This funding will help in the immediate term and pay vast dividends in the years to come. Housing and climate change may be two of the most significant factors shaping our society, and they are intertwined. As we see every day in the news, extreme weather events are becoming all too common, resulting in the destruction of property and the displacement of people. In Maine and New Hampshire, the coastlines are threatened by rising sea levels, and each summer sees record-breaking temperatures. How and where we live is changing, and it is changing rapidly.

At Avesta, we are taking proactive steps to address this change. Promoting climate resiliency, sustainability, and equity is one of Avesta’s strategic plan priorities and our housing developments are being built to design standards that go above and beyond what is required. We are advocating at all levels of government for housing solutions and policies that consider and respond to climate change. We will continue to investigate and implement sustainable design practices that provide safe, quality, affordable homes to people in need while also addressing climate change.

We are committed to being proactive to ensure that our communities are preserved for generations to come.

On Sept. 17, Avesta celebrated the grand opening of River Turn Apartments in Conway, N.H. The first of up to four planned buildings, River Turn adds 40 much-needed safe, quality, affordable homes for people of all ages to the picturesque Mount Washington Valley area. When all phases are complete, River Turn will consist of more than 150 affordable homes.

“We are proud that these 40 households have chosen to call River Turn their home, and proud to collaborate with community partners who have demonstrated such commitment to affordable housing in the Mount Washington Valley,” said Avesta Housing President & CEO Rebecca Hatfield.

Join us on Oct. 23 for the grand opening of Snow School Apartments!

Hot on the heels of River Turn, Avesta will host a grand opening celebration of Snow School Apartments just across the Maine-New Hampshire border in Fryeburg. Snow School provides 28 new affordable homes for ages 55 and older and is a prime example of how former public property can be repurposed to create affordable housing: It was built on the site of C.A. Snow School, a circa 1923 elementary school.

The grand opening celebration will include guest speakers, delicious food from local vendors, an apartment tour, and more. We invite you to join us as we celebrate this new addition to Fryeburg. RSVP below and help us celebrate!
