The Detective Work of Your Librarian

Did you know your librarian sometimes takes on the role of a detective? Picture this: a mysterious book with no author, illustrator, copyright, or publisher information, its pages crafted not from paper but from linen. That was the puzzle handed to our Head of Circulation Services, Matt, by a curious patron.

With only the book itself as a clue, Matt embarked on a librarian’s version of a treasure hunt. His quest led him to an antiquarian message board and, from there, to the vaults of the New York Public Library Digital Collections. Thanks to his sleuthing, the book’s secrets were revealed: published by The McLoughlin Brothers of New York between 1890 and 1899, with illustrations by Charles Kendrick.

Come by the library to share your own historical riddles or literary enigmas, and let’s uncover the stories behind them together!
