Senate Passes Raise the Age and Clean Slate

Last night, the Massachusetts Senate adopted Senator Brendan Crighton's amendment to the Economic Development bill (S.3178) which would raise the age of juvenile court jurisdiction to include 18-year-olds and Senator Cindy Friedman's #CleanSlate amendment which would remove administrative barriers to sealing juvenile and criminal records.

Please send a message (via email or on social media) to the Senators who were champions and co-sponsors of both of these amendments, advancing these two important priorities for our youth

We are overjoyed at these policies progressing and want to extend a special thank you to our legislative champions, Sen. Crighton and Sen. Friedman, as well as Senate President Spilka, Chair Rodrigues and Chair Edwards for their amazing leadership and advocacy.

We also want to thank each and every one you, our coalition partners and allies, for your calls, emails and conversations with your legislators stressing the importance of these policies in ensuring that young people are positioned to transition into a successful and productive adulthood, meaningfully participate in our economy and become a part of the workforce without enduring the significant barriers posed by criminal records.

A conference committee will be named to reconcile the Senate version (awaiting final bill number) and the House version (H5562). Your continued advocacy and support will be needed to make this final push to ensure that Raise the Age and Clean Slate make it out of conference committee and onto the Governor's desk.
