Historical Tidbit:
Hurricane of 1938
The early fall in New England is well-known as possible hurricane weather, but few were prepared for the terrible storm that hit this area on September 21, 1938. It was reported: "A terrifying hurricane swept the area for two hours Wednesday afternoon doing considerable damage. The winds, which at times reached a velocity estimated at close to 100 miles an hour, created an emergency which was quickly and efficiently handled. It is estimated that over 100 giant elms and other trees that line the streets of town were uprooted as well as many trees on private property. Considerable property damage was done. It was not possible to obtain an accurate estimate last evening."
Many homes all over the region were damaged. Power lines and telephone poles were down and roofs swept away from homes by the howling winds, leaving vacant gaps on houses and barns throughout the community. The steeple of the First Parish Unitarian Church in East Bridgewater was uplifted and plunged point down through the roof of the church.

Looking for Meals on Wheels Drivers
The East Bridgewater Council on Aging is in need of volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound senior citizens. This is a great volunteer activity to do with young children or for anyone available in the middle of the day. Meals are delivered in the middle of the day Monday through Friday and the route takes approximately 1½ hours to complete. Most volunteers deliver meals two to four days per month, but any amount of help is greatly appreciated. You must be willing to submit a CORI (criminal background check).
For more information, please call Kelley at the EBCOA at 508-378-1610.

Growing Wheatgrass
By Gregory Venezia
Wheatgrass is an easy plant to grow, because it’s a type of grass. You can grow it inside your house all year round in any type of container. I grew it in a fish box.
Wheatgrass grows fairly fast, and doesn’t require too much light. I would put it in front of a window on the south side of your house for optimum growth, but if you don’t have space you can probably put it on the north side. I placed mine by a south side window, but not directly in front of it. It’s grass, so treat it like you would your lawn.

“Altaring”
In these days of epidemic, which can bring about uncertainty, helplessness, and even fear, we find ourselves asking “what can I DO about it?”. Well, a fellow spiritual director shared the following way to channel that into positive, peace-filled, and prayerful action. It is a bit of a twist on something her Spiritual Director, Brother John, taught her. The suggestion was something referred to as “Altaring” (a clever, faith-centered, play on “altering” (or realigning our mind and soul)), something Brother John’s Spiritual Director had suggested to him (if you can’t tell by now, we spiritual directors LOVE passing on these good ideas!😊).
Here’s what you do: The first rock is for you to unite your cares with your brothers and sisters in faith, as well as a conduit through which you can pour your uneasiness, fear or grief from lost events. Pray over your rock. A wonderful way to surrender those worries is to bring it to the front steps of St. John’s Church or the Outdoor Stations of the Cross at St. Ann’s (or a place at your own Church). The sign featured in this post indicate the dropping-off points for your rocks! This will unite our worry together. I will gladly pray over the rocks each day. You can bring a rock every day if it helps. In doing this physical activity your are signaling to your heart to trust in God. He is carrying us and is by our side every step of this.
The second rock is to be decorated and left on the doorstep or on the side of the driveway for someone on your walk. Maybe you know a healthcare worker, first responder, or retail worker that could use a reminder they are loved and appreciated. Or maybe a local business that needs to be reminded their community is behind them in their efforts. Leave it where it can be seen and appreciated, but not where it can be tripped over.😮
Please share this post with anyone in need of ways to feel that peace for which we all long in these uncertain times, and let’s continue to pray for one another.
Peace,
Fr. Paul
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Clouds & Kites.
"Imagination is the highest kite one can fly."
~ Lauren Bacall
" Kites rise highest against the wind - not with it." ~ Winston Churchill
"When you're a kid, you lay in the grass and watch the clouds going over, and you literally don't have a thought in your mind. It's purely meditation, and we lose that."
~ Dick Van Dyke
"Today is the day when bold kites fly,
When cumulus clouds roar across the sky.
When robins return, when children cheer,
When light rain beckons spring to appear.
Today is the day when daffodils bloom,
Which children pick to fill the room,
Today is the day when grasses green,
When leaves burst forth for spring to be seen." ~ Robert McCracken
|
The air outside is free and clear. Let your imagination soar like a kite, let your dreams flow with the clouds. Smile. You are loved, accepted, and important. Do not face your challenges alone, we are in this together.
~ Jacquie
