May and June 2022
Have you visited the Cornucopia Community Gardens lately? You may have noticed three new bins near the entrance. This is part of the new Ventura Compost Co-Op. The Ventura Compost Co-Op at Cornucopia Community Gardens is a collaboration between the City of Ventura, Ojai Center for Regenerative Agriculture, and L.A. Compost. Funded through CalRecycle’s Community Composting for Green Spaces Grant Program, the Ventura Compost Co-Op will divert material from the landfill by composting material locally and create a shared space to learn about composting and waste diversion.

Registered members will be able to drop-off their food scraps and other accepted materials into the locked drop-off containers. The collected materials will be added to the onsite composting piles by the site manager on a weekly basis. Members are required to attend one volunteer event per year to maintain the compost piles and the site. In return, members will be allotted some of the finished compost to take home.

While residents in single family homes are already participating in the Food Waste Recycling Program, the Ventura Compost Co-Op is a great opportunity for residents who do not have access to the food waste recycling program yet. Additionally, community composting is a great way to build sustainability awareness and provide quality soil amendments for local use.

Green Business
Green Business Partnership with Westside Community Development Corporation

We are excited to announce a partnership with the Westside Community Development Corporation (WCDC) to bring more Spanish speaking businesses, and businesses from the Westside of Ventura, into the City of Ventura Green Business Program.

From now through June 2023, WCDC staff will work with businesses that feel more comfortable going through the Green Business certification process in Spanish. Do you know any Spanish-speaking businesses that should become a Green Business? Contact Jackie Pearce: (805) 628-3869
Green Schools
Cabrillo Middle School starts the Lunchtime Recycling Program

Cabrillo Middle School is the newest school to start the Lunchtime Recycling Program. During mealtimes, students can sort their waste into the trash, recycle, and compost bins. Many students are familiar with the program, since all Ventura Unified School District elementary schools have been sorting their waste since 2013.

The City of Ventura’s Green Schools Program provided waste sorting presentations to over 700 students, signs, and bins to support the rollout of this program on campus. Great job Cabrillo MS students and staff!

Food Waste Prevention
Thank you for recycling your food waste!

There have been a lot of new changes taking place with our new organics recycling program, and we wanted to take a minute to say "Thank You" for putting in the effort to help Ventura live more sustainably - your efforts are not going unnoticed. We do our best to listen to feedback and answer any questions you may have.

We have a dedicated webpage to answer the most frequently asked questions, visit our FAQ webpage.
Recycling Tip
Properly dispose of e-waste

Old or damaged electric cords and cables should not be thrown in the trash. These items are electronic waste, or e-waste, and need to be disposed of responsibly.

Ventura residents can take e-waste free of charge to Gold Coast Recycling. Electronic Waste can also be dropped off at the City's monthly Household Hazardous (HHW) waste events. For more information about HHW events or to register for our next event, please visit our webpage.
Defensible Space Helps Keep Our Community Safe
With a year-round fire season, community members can help firefighters protect Ventura by reducing vegetation density around their homes. Defensible space provides the best defense in slowing the spread of wildfire. Learn more: www.CityofVentura.ca.gov/FHRP.

This year, Ventura Fire will inspect 6,200 properties in high fire hazard areas starting in mid-May. If you receive a notice in the mail, please complete 100 feet of vegetation management from structures by May 18, 2022.
