Scrub Seal Project:
Did you know that the chip seal applies a special protective surface to existing pavement? Basically, we lay down a sticky surface on the road and cover it with small chips of rock. The sticky surface and rocks get pushed into the road by traffic, creating a protective layer. It’s a cost-effective way to extend to life of a roadway.
A quick reminder that it is best if traffic drives slowly (20 mph or less) on the new chip-sealed surface for several days after it has been applied. The roadway will have loose gravel on it until it is swept 3 to 7 days after the scrub seal. Bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, rollerbladers, or those using strollers - please use caution!
The contractor will be coming back through to apply a final layer in the form of a fog seal. A fog seal is a light application of a diluted slow-setting asphalt emulsion to the surface. Some of the benefits of fog sealing include:
- Protecting the pavement surface from moisture intrusion
- Shielding the pavement structure from oxidation
- Improving pavement life
- Delaying the need for major maintenance or rehabilitation
- Improving color contrast between pavement and striping
Can I walk or drive on the road right after it has been Fog Sealed?
No, you should not walk or drive on a road that has been fog-sealed until it has been reopened. If it is not done drying, it will stick to everything that comes into contact with it (tires, shoes, feet, paws, etc.)
What if I get it on my vehicle or on my clothing?
During application, the fog seal is very wet and sticky. If the liquid asphalt can be washed off immediately, it can be done using soap and water. If it has dried, try using a spot/stain remover that will remove tar and other oil-based stains like Goo Gone or Contractors Solvent. Generally, it can be wiped off easily, avoid scrubbing.
Why We Chip Seal:
Chip seal isn't a magic solution for road repair, but it has several benefits:
- Protects the pavement: It acts as a waterproof barrier, shielding the road base from water damage, which is a major cause of cracks and potholes.
- Safety Benefits: The embedded chips create a textured surface, enhancing traction for vehicles, especially in wet weather. It also provides and anti-glare surface during wet weather.
- Cost-Effective: Compared to complete road repaving, chip seal is a much more affordable way to extend a road's lifespan by several years.
Not only does a chip seal preserve road surfaces, it also improves safety. The protective coat restores traction to prevent skidding, particularly on wet roads. It helps visibility by providing an anti-glare surface during wet weather.
