Dear Friend,
While our kids are on summer break, our schools in Iowa and across the country are working hard to recruit and retain qualified educators. And that’s important because we all remember that one teacher who believed in us, encouraged us, and helped shape our future.
Unfortunately, that’s becoming more difficult every year. Today, roughly 1 in 8 teaching positions are either unfilled or staffed by someone who isn't fully certified. And one roadblock interested students face is the cost. That’s where the federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant helps.
The TEACH Grant program helps support future teachers as they get their degree. While well intended, this program has had some issues and is in need of updates to work better.
Last year I met with President Mark Nook of UNI and he told me about concerns with the program and the importance of more guardrails to ensure these grants are going to students who intend to become teachers and stay in the field. Senator Grassley has led the charge in the Senate, and I was happy to lead the bipartisan TEACH Improvement Act in the House.
Our solution increases financial support, while improving accountability and reducing unintended loan conversions.
My mom was a teacher, and as a mom, I know the effort that teachers put in every single day. If someone has the calling for this profession, we should help them get there. I'm proud to work across the aisle on a commonsense solution that supports the next generation of educators and strengthens our schools!
