A Minute from the Manager
|
|
Hi there!
Here we are at the first Saturday of the new year, when we get back to our normal Farmers Market hours–8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and I can’t wait! I have to tell you, the month of January was probably one of the most productive months for us here at the Market because of everything we were able to get accomplished:
- Pressure washed the entire interior of the market;
- Deep-cleaned all walls and windows;
- Made countless maintenance repairs;
- Installed new restroom counter tops;
- Added new farmers and vendors (and still adding new ones!)
When you come to the Market this Saturday, you will find that every vendor at the Market has a new location. We will have signage for you hanging in the foyer that will point you to the direction in which you can find your favorite farmers and processors. Our artisans have been peppered all around the market as well, so we are thrilled to provide a new shopping experience for you!
Also, we have encouraged all vendors to provide any information concerning their products, their farms, their businesses, etc., to you at their location. The vendors of the Mississippi Farmers Market are always eager to answer any questions you may have about their product, so please ask!
As always, I would love to hear from you! Any questions you may have or any thoughts you may want to share, please either email me at lisa@mdac.ms.gov, or call me at 601-354-6573.
Exciting days are ahead for the Mississippi Farmers Market, and I am thrilled you are a part of it all!
My Best,
Lisa

Arugula vs. Mizuna: What's the Difference?
|
|
The Mississippi Farmers Market offers a variety of locally grown leafy, green vegetables for shoppers to incorporate into their cooking routine. Greens are even perfect for eating during the Super Bowl this Sunday! More greens, please!
Similar in shape and color, arugula and mizuna are easily confused with one another. They are both members of the mustard family. Arugula has a peppery, spicy, and slightly tart flavor. It has a broader, darker green leaf and rounder tips than mizuna. It is popularly used in salad dishes and is similar to spinach with its crisp. On the other hand, mizuna has leaves that are a lighter green (and sometimes yellow) and is smoother in texture. Its shape is also more feathery. Also used in salads, mizuna can be steamed, boiled, stir-fried or used to complement other greens. Both of these greens mix well with other greens to creatively make delicious, fresh salads! They shrink when cooked.
Check out this
Bacon, Egg, & Arugula Wrap Recipe below. Of course, you have the option of swapping the arugula with mizuna, if you wish! Don't forget to show us your photos on social media, so we can see how your delicious dish food turned out. Use the #MSFarmersMarket hashtag or tag us @msfarmersmarket!
