Habitat Happenings — August 2026

As August warms up, we're thinking about sweet Summer treats and community coming together. Join us on Sunday, August 23 from 1-3pm for the 5th Annual Ice Cream Social. There will be raffles, games, and fun for everyone —bring a friend. We even have a new ice cream truck design to unveil. Come have a treat to support local housing solutions! Learn more and register below.

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Ramp Up Challenge. This pilot program aims to complete 12 accessibility ramp projects this fiscal year. Your generosity helps make this possible! We are now accepting Ramp Program Applications for local homeowners in need of an aluminum accessibility ramp. Interested applicants should visit our website to learn more and download an application. This program supports Seniors, Veterans, and households with a disability to maintain stability and independent homeownership.

Finally, a major thank you to our recent volunteer group from Baker Tilly. They helped to literally level things up at the Fischer Village build site in Springfield. Volunteers moved a mountain of gravel to raise the grade of the site as we prepare for completion on four more homes. Business support is critical to achieving Habitat's mission of bringing people together to building homes, communities, and hope. We are always looking for new partners to help finish Fischer Village. If you want to make a mark on housing in Springfield, reach out or donate today!

Meet the Habitat Staff: Peter Falkenstein, ReStore Associate

Peter is the longest serving employee of Habitat Central Lane, with 15 years served in the ReStore. He was the first ever paid warehouse employee and you can always find him with his trusty lumber cart, pricing and maintaining the large expanse of building materials in the ReStore.

We asked him a few questions over coffee and donuts to help you get to know him better:

Why did you apply for this job?

  • “I really wanted a job to help people, as the last job I had that helped in amazing ways was tree planting in the 1970s.”

Fifteen years is a long time, why have you stayed?

  • “The goal of Habitat’s mission is to help others, and that’s what I want to do. When I first started, I delivered lumber and building supplies to a Habitat project. In 2018, I semi-retired; the staff, volunteers, customers and the people we serve is what keeps me going.”

What does home mean to you?

  • “If I hadn’t received an inheritance, I would not have a home. I assumed a Veteran’s loan, I paid off their equity and assumed payments. I’ve lived in the home for over thirty years; it’s a single-story ranch style house perfect for aging in place. Besides the home I live in, I find the ReStore is my home.”

If you were going to be any tool, what tool would you be?

  • “I would be a multitool because I like to be a multidimensional useful guy,” he says with a laugh.

Come back for more next month. Together we build homes, communities, and hope!
