Packing groups are one of the most important, yet frequently misunderstood, elements of dangerous goods transportation. Many hazmat employees learn to identify hazard classes, labels, and UN identification numbers early in their training, but packing groups introduce an additional layer of regulatory complexity that directly affects packaging selection, quantity limitations, and transportation safety. What creates even more confusion is that not every hazardous material is assigned a packing group at all. That detail often surprises employees who assume every dangerous good automatically falls into Packing Group I, II, or III. |
