Unveiling Fort Collins' Hidden Chapters:
The Asian American Story
| | What happens when a community is written out of history? This Thursday, July 31 at 6 PM, step into a hidden chapter of Fort Collins’ past at the Global Village Museum. Far from a dry history lesson, this is an essential opportunity to explore the resilience, contributions, and challenges of early Asian American immigrants. You'll discover how Chinese settlers, arriving as early as the late 1840s, helped build the foundational railroads and established businesses like laundries on North College Avenue, creating a small but vibrant Chinatown. Then, there’s the Japanese immigrants who were crucial laborers in the sugar beet fields and constructed vital agricultural ditch systems, many of which still provide water to local farms and homes today! Presented by Fort Collins Historic Preservation Services Division, this program offers a curated, in-depth exploration into the rise and disappearance of these communities, especially due to the impact of discriminatory laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act. No history should be forgotten, and this program offers a meaningful opportunity to honor those stories while contributing to a more truthful and inclusive understanding of our shared heritage. Admission is $10, light refreshments are included. | | |
From Tibet to Norway to right here in Fort Collins, these stories are waiting to be told and experienced by you. We hope you’ll join us for these powerful programs and help us close out the month with heart and purpose!
See you soon,
