SOMETHING IS HAPPENING

ON 3RD STREET

BEFORE THE CURTAIN RISES

BEFORE A SINGLE SHOVEL HITS THE GROUND

This month, we are taking you backstage. Not to the stage you will one day sit in front of, but to everything that has to happen before that stage exists.

This April, we are sharing a four-part series walking you through the work happening right now, every day, at the future home of The Pearl, Theatre on 3rd. We hope you will follow along, ask questions, and share it with your neighbors.

A quick glance at the site may look familiar. Behind that quiet exterior, however, there is a tremendous amount of work underway.

Before a shovel breaks ground, multiple layers must be in place: a construction-ready site, a completed design, secured funding, and all required approvals. Each of these steps demands careful work, time, coordination, and the involvement of multiple partners all moving in the same direction. It is, in many ways, exactly like preparing for a performance. The audience sees the curtain. Behind that curtain, magic is already happening.

We have reached important milestones along the way. One of the most significant has been securing a $2.1 million grant through Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program — RACP for short. This funding plays a critical role in making the project possible, and we are deeply grateful to Oxford Borough, Oxford Mainstreet Inc., Senator Comitta, and Representative John Lawrence for their partnership in making it happen.

We are also working closely with our design and construction partners to shape a theatre that will serve this community for decades to come. We are excited to share that concept designs are ready, offering a first look at what The Pearl might look like. More on that in the weeks ahead.

We know this requires patience. We feel that too. What we also know, with certainty, is what this can become. We are getting closer every day.

Come backstage with us this April. Let us show you all that is happening before we break ground. We are grateful to have you with us, and we hope you will share the good news with those around you.

The best is still ahead.

THEATRE WAS BORN OUTDOORS

Theatre was born outdoors.

Long before the Greeks carved their theatres into hillsides, human beings gathered around fire to tell stories. The circle of light, the darkness beyond it, the voice carrying across the night; this was the first stage.

The land where The Pearl will stand has always been a gathering place. According to Oxford's own historical record, Third Street — the very street where our theatre will rise — was part of the Nanticoke Trail, traveled by Indigenous people from the Poconos to the Chesapeake Bay for centuries before Oxford was a town. People stopped here because the ground was level and the water was clean. It was a resting place, a meeting place, a crossroads.

The ancient Greeks formalized what was already ancient. They built their theatres open to the sky, honoring Dionysus, god of the vine, the harvest, and the earth's cycles of renewal. The dramatic festivals were agricultural celebrations as much as artistic ones, timed to the turning of the seasons. There was no fourth wall because there was no wall at all.

Theatre, at its origin, was an act of gathering in and with the earth.

As Earth Day approaches, The Pearl, Theatre on 3rd carries that spirit forward. We honor the people who inhabited and traveled this land before us, and all those who have gathered on this corner of Oxford across the centuries. We commit to honoring the stories that connect us to each other and to this place we call home.
