Highlights Around the District

First-Year Students Learn How to Budget

Studies show that when young people understand how to budget their money early in life, they are more likely to succeed financially as adults.

That’s why dozens of first-year students from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools participated in a unique real-world budgeting exercise program.

The event occurred on Thursday, April 4, at the Kansas City Urban Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.

First-year students from Wyandotte, Washington, J.C. Harmon, F.L. Schlagle, and Sumner Academy of Arts and Science High Schools participated in interactive exercises designed to help them understand some of the realities of preparing for the future in terms of employment, finances, and the cost of living.

Each student was given a life profile in certain scenarios, such as being a single parent, having a dual-income household, or being a doctor versus having a part-time job. Based on those scenarios, students had to make budgeting decisions.

How One Student Brought

his Dreams to Reality

Kansas City is known to people across America for its love of American football. But, over the past several years, the city has become mesmerized by fútbol – also known as soccer.

Kansas City, Kansas, is home to the Major League Soccer team Sporting Kansas City. Because of the success and fandom Kansas City has had with this team, not only has the city added a professional women's team to the mix, but KC will also be one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup.

Due to the tremendous growth of sports in Kansas City, it is no surprise that many KCKPS students want to participate in the fun. Earlier this week, Angel Castillo was surprised with an exciting opportunity to represent his school and his city.

Angel is a graduate of Washington High School and currently attends the 18-21 Transition Program at Life Academy at J.C. Harmon High School. Angel, who loves sports, was recently chosen to join the Sporting Kansas City Unified Soccer team. The program provides opportunities for Kansas City area high school students with and without intellectual disabilities to train, play, and compete together on the same team.

Angel’s family first heard about the team when they received an email from Sporting Kansas City with information about tryouts. Soccer being Angel’s favorite sport, his mother registered him right away. After discovering that Angel made the team, he jumped into practices and signing day.

Sporting Kansas City took time to hold a special signing day ceremony for everyone who made the team. During the signing ceremony, Angel was able to sign his letter of intent to play for the team. Angel’s teammates, family, and coaches cheered him on as he signed to play.

Angel will get the chance to travel with his team to Minnesota next month to compete against Minnesota’s Unified team. He will also play in September at Children’s Mercy Park. Angel is extremely happy to be on the team and is ready to compete!

Congratulations to Angel.

Everyone Benefits with

Work Based Learning

One KCK business is still feeling the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they recently turned to some high school students for some out-of-the-box thinking.

The Merc Co+Op is a grocery store at 5th and Minnesota that is member owned, which means it is governed by policies of the community and customers. They had their grand opening during the height of the pandemic and were unable to invite people to celebrate. They think missing those key organic outreach moments in the beginning contributes to a lack of awareness in the community about what they have to offer.

“A co-op is basically designed to meet the needs of the people that it serves,” said Quinlan Carttar, Outreach Specialist for the Merc. “It keeps all of the jobs, profits, and ultimately the strategic direction of the company all within the immediate community. It enriches the community for everyone who lives here. Anyone can shop at our store, but we encourage and incentivize ownership.”
