NEWS & UPDATES
Introducing...
Our New Summer Camp Director, Emma "Geller" Robert!
We're excited to take this opportunity to congratulate Emma Robert (Geller) who has been hired as Camp Kawartha's Summer Camp Director!

She is an enthusiastic member of the Camp Kawartha community and we're so pleased to have someone take on the role as skilled, knowledgeable, creative, and caring as Emma.
Hello Camp Kawartha Family,

I am really very excited to be stepping into the role of Summer Camp Director this upcoming summer! I know that this will be a transition for many as we begin to adjust to having a new Summer Camp Director, particularly following Adam’s (Wham) 19-year legacy in the position. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to work together as a team with the staff to continue to build upon Camp Kawartha’s legacy and continue to make memorable summers for all our campers and families.

I am eager to get to know staff and camper families better as we embark on Camp Kawartha’s next century of creating magical summer camp experiences! For those of you who don’t know me too well, I’ll share a little bit about myself and my roots here at camp!

Consider Becoming a Monthly Donor in 2022!
Monthly giving to Camp Kawartha is a wonderful giving option as you consider your giving plan for 2022. Our Monthly Donor Program allows you to spread your donations out during the year and provides us with a dependable base of support. It’s affordable, flexible, convenient, and an effective way to give.

You can choose your monthly gift to start as low as $10.00 per month – that’s about 33¢ per day! You can modify your amount at any time, and 100% of your donation is eligible for a tax receipt which will be sent out at the end of the year.

Your monthly gift provides us with a steady and reliable source of income that helps us when we are planning.

And you can choose to have the deduction made automatically to a credit card or your bank account!
Monthly Giving Supports
  • our award-winning programming;
  • making a Camp experience affordable for struggling families;
  • upgrading our facilities;
  • helping buy equipment;
  • helping employ students and build their resumes!

A Little Bit of Fun at This Time of Year!
The offices will be closed beginning December 20th and staff will be returning on January 4th.

Just to have a little bit of fun before we go and continuing to focus on the idea of charity and how this time of year makes us think of others, we came up with a little challenge. If you can identify the author of this passage, the title of the book, and character who makes the declaration, then you could win a prize pack from our Gift Store!

It’s a brainteaser…
"There are many things from which I might have derived good by which I have not profited, I dare say," returned the nephew, "Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas-time, when it has come round... as a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people…as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"
There are lots of clues in there to guide you!
To enter, email your three answers to sramey@campkawartha.ca – the draw will be made January 4th! For those who are stumped, the answers will be shared in our January newsletter!!

All the Board and Staff wish each of you and yours the happiest of holidays! We’ll see you in 2022!
2021 Annual General Meeting Round Up!
On Tuesday, December 14th, we hosted our second virtual Annual General Meeting. Camp Kawartha community members joined in to celebrate the year's accomplishments.

Participants enjoyed a great keynote presentation from Malaika Collette, a passionate environmental advocate. Presentations were also made by Camp Kawartha's Board Chair, Myke Healy; Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg; and Brad Collyer of McColl Turner LLP.

See our website for a full recap of the event, and check out our 2021 Annual Report for all the details for the past year.
Ontario Camps Association Announcement
The Ontario Camps Association is the governing body for camps, and their mission is to support, advance, promote, and accredit camps across the province. Their more than 600 Standards keep member camps accountable and operating at a level of excellence.

We are delighted to report that their Standards Visit during the summer has resulted in Camp Kawartha being re-accredited for four more years!

The accreditation demonstrates that our efforts to continually improve our operating standards in the areas of safety, site, staff, and programs have met the highest standards of camping!
Ultra Marathon an Amazing Success!
The Monarch Ultra Relay Run, an 1,800 kilometre ultra marathon from Peterborough to Barrie, Ontario, successfully completed its 3-week journey to raise awareness of threatened monarch butterflies. Fifty-eight (58) ultra-runners participated in the relay run across southern Ontario as a call to action to protect monarch butterflies and raise funds for Camp Kawartha.

Partnering with the Camp was important to the Monarch Ultra’s mission of empowering the next generation of Earth stewards. Through the Monarch Ultra Relay Run and Virtual 10km event, they raised over $10,000 for Camp Kawartha. Continue Reading.

We thank all the runners, donors, participants, and community members who supported this great journey!

NATURE NOTES
Nature Showcase: Snowy Owl
The Snowy Owl is aptly named because of their snow-white colouring. The males are generally whiter than females and the males get whiter as they age (who doesn’t!). The females never become completely white. They remain brownish with darker markings.

These owls live primarily in the tundra of North America and Eurasia, hunting lemmings (the main part of their diet), other rodents, rabbits, other birds, and fish. They have excellent eyesight but, rely most often on their keen sense of hearing to track their prey. They are most active at dawn and dusk, unlike many other owls who sleep during the day and hunt at night. Learn more.
