MREP 2024 Applications are Still Open

The 2024 Marine Resource Education Program West Coast session will be held October 21-25 in Newport, Oregon, and is still accepting applications now! MREP is a neutral platform outside the regulatory process for fishermen to:

  • Learn the nuts and bolts of marine fisheries science and management
  • Demystify acronyms and vocabulary
  • Gain tools and insights into effective engagement in your regional Fishery Management Council
  • Connect with key regional fishery science and management experts
Apply to MREP

This is a FREE workshop to attend, however your time is a factor that may be an obstacle in taking advantage of this opportunity.

MBFT supports our local fishing industry in having a voice in fisheries management. Your knowledge matters, and the MREP program helps you learn how to better engage with the process.

Therefore we offer up to three $1000 scholarships to MREP each year, and applications to our scholarship are now available. You must register for MREP before applying to the scholarship program.

30x30 Public Comment Period

In 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued Executive Order N-82-20, which committed to conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030 as part of a broader effort to fight climate change, protect biodiversity, and expand access to nature for all Californians. In 2022, the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) released Pathways to 30×30: Accelerating Conservation of California’s Nature, which details strategies and opportunities for achieving the 30×30 target.

OPC has launched a 120-day public comment and tribal consultation period on the draft framework with comments due via the 30×30 Draft Decision-Making Framework-Public Comment Submission Form or submitted to 30x30coastalwaters@resources.ca.gov by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

Focus Group Invitation

Are you interested in joining a focus group discussion for fishermen related to changing ocean conditions and offshore wind energy development?

A team of researchers at UC Santa Barbara and NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center are studying the socioeconomic impacts of changing ocean conditions, extreme weather events, and offshore wind energy development on West Coast fisheries. They are identifying mitigation strategies to recommend to BOEM to minimize negative impacts. They are organizing small in-person focus group discussions to incorporate fishermen’s knowledge and ensure their findings are useful to fishing communities.

If you are interested in joining, please complete the registration form by Friday, September 6th linked here. The focus groups are scheduled for the following dates and locations:

Thursday, September 12 in Eureka, CA

Saturday, September 14 in Newport, OR

Monday, September 16 in Morro Bay, CA

If you are interested in speaking with the research team, please reach out to Ellen Willis-Norton (ewillisn@ucsb.edu, 858-692-8630).
