Dear Church School Friends,

Last Sunday in the midst of his sermon, Nick paused to ask who had ever read the Chronicles of Narnia. I confess, while I've read some of Lewis's nonfiction, I haven't read these classics. Nonetheless, I've been thinking about them recently, not because of the trailer for The Magician's Nephew that was just released, but rather because I'm currently working on an interview with an author whose first book is a picture book biography of C.S. Lewis. It's a real delight and I expect the interview will land next week alongside the book's release.

Reading this picture book and prepping the interview means I've learned some of the history behind these stories, and the ways in which they are rooted in C.S. Lewis's deep love of children. Sheltering evacuee children during the Second World War, he put his lifelong love of storytelling to work providing comfort to them. And, when the books came out and enchanted children around the world, he recruited his brother to help him respond to every letter a child sent him.

In Godly Play, we say that story is one of the native languages of childhood, and I imagine most of us have a relationship with one story or another that has been a source of comfort and escape in the face of difficulty. This week, I want to invite us all into that corner of our lives: where has story lifted you up before? How can you turn to it now, and how can you share it?

Primary Godly Play: The Great Family

The desert can be a dangerous place. People don't go there unless they have to or unless they are ready.

Conversely, the kids. asked a few weeks ago if it was time to head into the desert. It's where some of our most important stories take place, after all! That's why we keep a little piece of the the desert in our room.

The Great Family is the anchor of these "desert" stories, and a reminder that we all belong and that, even when the destination is unclear, God is leading us into something new.

Upper Elementary/Middle School Godly Play: Sarah

Sarah was so great with years by the time she heard the prophecy that she would bear a child – and so she laughed. But it was true!

The story of the Great Family to which we all belong hinges on Sarah. We always say that without the Mother Mary there would be no baby Jesus, but without the Mother Mary, there would be no Isaac and Rebecca and all that came after, generation after generation... until your parents were born, and you were born, and your children were born.

What do we discover when we turn more closely to Sarah's story, moving her from the margins of the journey that shows us Abraham leading her endlessly through the great expanse of desert? What was she experiencing in the midst of that faithful following? What lies beyond her witness to the absurd abundance of God's promise – carrying her into its fulfilment?

Apple and Magnolia by Laura Gehl

I am *so* close to having catalogued every children/youth/family-oriented book anywhere in the building, and one aspect of that work has simply been weeding. I yank out books no one will ever use or things that aren't helpful to have in a church library. But that doesn't mean removing everything that isn't explicitly about faith.

Apple and Magnolia is one of those books that not only wasn't weeded, but is something I added to the library after reading it to kids at the Wild Goose Festival a few years ago (and that I have a copy of in my own library at home). It's a story about a peculiar kind of friendship, about care and nurture, and about hope. And, maybe most importantly, it's about the miracles that happen when those things come together through the eyes of a determined and tender child.
