Week of March 25-29, 2019
"Spring is a time to find out where you are, who you are, and move toward where you are going." Penelope Trunk

Dear Southern Door Community,
The lighter hours at night, the warmer weather hopefully soon in the air, and the life that comes with spring are all signs of new beginnings. I encourage you to take a few minutes this week to create a new beginning. It seems that in the world today, there can be a lot of finger pointing and blame when something doesn't go the way we think it should. We all know that that kind of attitude never brings about change. When you think about your relationships with your family, your colleagues at work, would they say that you don't take them for granted - that you work to "lift them up" rather than "put them down" - that they see you as a person of positivity and hope - as one who creates new beginnings?

Speaking of new beginnings, many of us were able to witness the rebirth of the SD Show Choir for last week's Solo & Ensemble Contest! A special thanks to Mrs. Bonnie Weydt (musical director) and Mr. Cory Vandertie (choreographer) for their fantastic work with the students. This group is now headed to state, along with many other music students. Our annual POPS concert is Monday night, so please treat yourself to a night of musical delights and celebration of our students' talents. Equally outstanding in their competitions is our Forensics team, which is sending 23 students to state. This is a very busy time of year as we round the corner to our last quarter of school, and also implement important planning for the next school year, including new opportunities to better meet student needs.

Even though this time of year brings many academic and co-curricular celebrations, we know that the most gratifying time is realizing the changes in our students, and the growth they are making this year. Thank you to your continued partnerships with us to meet the needs of our students and families, as we strive to be Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING UPDATE: Monday night's board meeting was a busy one, with opportunities for the district to better meet the needs of our students, including a full-day 4K option for students, and a partnership with the Door County Sheriff's Department for School Resource Officer services. An updated compensation schedule based on a three-year market study was also approved, which addresses the community and board priority of recruiting and retaining high quality staff, while remaining competitive with other local districts. CULINARY TEAM ENTERS STATE WELLNESS CONTEST
Mr. John Swanson, A’viand’s Food Director and Mrs. Deb Ehlers, Family Consumer Ed teacher, have been meeting with a group of high school students during ELT (Extended Learning Time) to develop three recipes for the DPI Whipping Up Wellness contest in Madison. The team consists of Luke Bousley, Annabelle Clark, Dave Hoida, Alex Quigley, and Amber Salentine.

They had to write a detailed standardized recipe which met the USDA guidelines for the school lunch program for fat, calories, sodium, and portion size. A'viands dietetic support analyzed the recipes to double check the nutritional components.  The recipes were recently served to high school students at lunch, and included Thai Chicken, Ethiopian Winter Vegetable Stew, and Squash Tomato Pork Bake. As part of a lengthy application process, the team needed to submit their final recipes and pictures. Judging is now underway and we should hear of results sometime in April. The first two pictures show the development of the recipes in the test kitchen, and the next ones feature the team serving their final recipes to the high school students. Good Luck Team Southern Door!
