NLI SPOTLIGHT
TODD KENNEDY

Todd Kennedy is a proud graduate of the first Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland (NLC) class and exemplifies the work of thousands of NLC alumni throughout our city. Todd is the youngest child of fifteen to the parents of George Kennedy and Lillian Kennedy and a product of Cleveland Public Schools. He attended The Ohio State University and plans to continue work towards his Social Work degree at Cleveland State University next Spring. Todd’s devotion to strengthening our community has been evident throughout his career. He is the Founder/Director/Coach of the PACE Tumbling and Eclectic Arts Program in Ohio City, has served as Coordinator of YMCA's Youth Development Program, and has been actively involved in after-school enrichment programs in the Cleveland Height/University Heights School District.

Todd is a recipient of YMCA of USA National Black and Hispanic Achievers Program and the Cuyahoga County Commissioners’ Award of Excellence for working with Cleveland's Youth. He is also a graduate of CWRU’s Treu-Mart Youth Development Fellowship Program.

He states, “As a graduate of Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland, I gained a multitude of skills which enabled me to achieve the goals I set for myself. The essential skills of gathering resources, connecting community assets, and building positive relationships with people was the cornerstone and foundation of NLC. The program is a model for many programs that exist presently in Cleveland and elsewhere. NLC empowered me with confidence, focus and direction - which I have utilized within all aspects of my numerous community affiliations.”

Todd’s favorite quote is from William Johnsen: "If it is to be, it's up to me.” NLI applauds Todd for being a leader in Cleveland and for taking initiative in working with the city’s youth.

TRUE2U MENTORING
Thanks go out to all of our student mentors. With coronavirus guidelines prohibiting in-person activities, they have offered special messages of praise and inspiration for their 8 th grade students! All of these messages are being collected and shared directly with the students. We deeply appreciate them taking the time to say good-bye and good luck to our 8 th graders!

The Summer Leadership Academy (SLA) will go forward this July, but we will move to remote programming. We have 58 students that plan to join us this summer. The SLA will last for four weeks and students will attend a virtual session each day, Each week will have a theme and students will be assigned projects and daily journal prompts to complete outside of the remote group sessions. Through our continued partnership with Youth Opportunities Unlimited, students will be paid for taking part in the programming. If you have questions about SLA please contact Lindsay Hershberger at lindsay@neighborhoodleadership.org .

We are developing contingency plans and modified curriculum for the 2020/2021 8th Grade True2U program. Possible scenarios and options include: streamlined curriculum presented in fewer and shorter sessions; remote mentoring sessions; one-day volunteer opportunities for mentoring; more flexible, school-based scheduling; utilizing some school-based personnel or Out-of-School Time providers as additional mentors; etc. The safety and health of students and mentors and their families is of the utmost importance to us and so we will have to see how things progress before we make any final plans. We will certainly keep you up-to-date on those plans as we move forward and hope that you may join us in whatever capacity you are able to.

For our 9 th Grade Extension and True2U CollegeBound Programs for 10 th and 11 th graders, we are developing remote options and curriculum so that we can ensure that those programs continue in the fall in order to support our students as best we can.
SCHOOLS AS NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCES
