Severe Weather Update

Updated 7-21-26 at 1 PM Eastern

Good afternoon, folks. Just a quick update on today's severe weather setup. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) area farther west and south, now covering a larger portion of Central and Eastern Kentucky.

This orange-shaded region remains the focus for the greatest severe weather potential, with scattered to numerous severe storms expected this afternoon and evening. However, don't let your guard down if you're outside the ‘Enhanced Risk’. Severe storms will still be possible elsewhere, but with less coverage.

All severe weather hazards remain on the table as a broken line of storms moves south-southeast through the region. Damaging straight-line winds and torrential rainfall, which could lead to localized flash flooding, remain the primary concerns. Wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible with the strongest storms.

While the damaging wind threat is the main story, a few storms could also produce large hail or a brief tornado. The overall tornado threat remains much lower, but it's not zero.

The first Severe Thunderstorm Watch of the day was just issued for portions of Northeastern KY and expect another one soon for Central KY.

Below is a look at the latest SPC hazard probabilities. Based on the latest model guidance, the main line of storms looks to move into northern Kentucky by mid-to-late afternoon and continue pushing south-southeast through the evening and early overnight hours.

Additional information is available in the latest National Weather Service briefings:

Western KY - NWS Paducah, KY

Central KY - NWS Louisville, KY

Eastern KY - NWS Jackson, KY

Don't forget that you can track storms in real time using the UK Weather Alert App. I've included download information and QR codes below if you'd like to share.

As a reminder, the interactive radar includes optional overlays for NWS watches/warnings and lightning, making it easy to keep tabs on developing weather across the region. Stay safe!
