As temperatures across Florida and much of the country soar under the intense grip of a summer heat dome, we’re all feeling the effects of this unrelenting heat, and so are the orangutans and chimpanzees at the Center for Great Apes.
With consecutive days well into the 90s and heat indexes pushing past 105°, providing relief and comfort for our residents has become more important than ever. While these apes are native to warm and tropical climates, many of them, like our older orangutans and chimpanzees, are more vulnerable to the health risks that come with extreme heat, especially when combined with age-related challenges.
That’s why our caregivers are working tirelessly to ensure every ape has access to the shade, hydration, and cooling options they need. Nighthouses are equipped with circulating fans and overhead misters. We offer frequent frozen treats like “fruitcicles” and icy enrichment tubs filled with cool water and toys. Shade cloths have been added to trailways and habitats. And we monitor each individual daily for any signs of heat-related stress.
One of the apes who especially appreciates these comforts is Popi, our beloved 54-year-old orangutan and one of the oldest residents at the sanctuary. Popi relaxes in front of her fan while she enjoys an ice treat. Her caregivers know just how to make her feel comfortable, and in this weather, that means extra effort, extra monitoring, and yes… extra electricity.
Our summer appeal is dedicated to ensuring apes like Popi stay cool, comfortable, and well-cared for during this challenging season. And while our team handles the day-to-day work, we rely on the generosity of our friends to help keep the power running, the fans blowing, and the ice machines stocked.
If you'd like to help bring some cooling comfort to Popi and her friends during this summer heat wave, your support will go directly to work.
Thank you for helping us keep our residents safe, cared for, and cool… even when the Florida heat doesn’t take time off.
