Please Avoid
Wet Trails
Please avoid using Town trails when they're wet or muddy. The hard work our trail stewards and volunteers do to maintain Town trails can be destroyed when people hike or ride in the mud. It usually takes a day or so of warm weather for the ground to harden following the rain. The damage done to the saturated trails remains much longer than a single outing. Remember: “If you leave a track, please go back!”
Thank-you for your dedication in caring for our trails and Open Spaces.

Special Memories:
A Veteran’s Memory Garden
This past Veteran’s Day, the Cave Creek Museum announced plans for a Veterans Memory Garden in front of the museum.
The idea for this memory garden project started with Memorial Day 2022 and guest speaker Matt Scott of Sons of the American Revolution. Scott spoke of our “unknown soldiers” and mentioned the availability of a small plaque commemorating the memory of these unknown American soldiers.
For Board President Darlene Southern this planted a small seed of - yes "Let's memorialize our veterans with a plaque." Museum staff and volunteers grabbed onto the idea of a small veterans’ commemorative rock between the museum’s historic TB Cabin and town’s first church exhibits. The idea then grew to the moving of the gazebo creating a larger veterans’ area.
Realizing a move of the old gazebo was not feasible, a suggestion was made instead for the use of half the botanical garden in front of the museum. Finally, it was determined nothing but the best would do so, “Why not turn the entire botanical garden into a Veterans Memory Garden?” The original tiny “seed” idea had turned into a huge and quite inspiring GARDEN.
The museum’s memory garden will include six flags, one for each branch of the military. The center of the garden will be a special location honoring Cave Creek veterans and unknown fallen soldiers. Each area will provide seating for reflection of loved ones who’ve served and contributed to our great nation. The plan will also include the sale of memorial bricks/plaques for celebrating and reflecting upon veteran loved ones in one special place. Design work for this beautiful garden was donated by Marc Viator of Viator Associates.
From just a couple of people discussing an idea - a committee was formed of now 13 members. Heading the committee are co-chairs Steve Greenberg and Chris Kempster along with members of the museum’s Dream Team, representatives of Daughters of the American Revolution, and Cave Creek’s American Legion Post 34.
According to Steve Greenberg, “The Veterans Memory Garden is not going to be an old-style memorial. It will include art pieces that come from pairing a veteran with a local artist. The artist and the veteran will work closely together to collaborate on to express the vision of the veteran.”
Funding for this project will be totally from community donations both cash and in-kind. A list of in-kind donation options is being created so residents and merchant members of our community can feel the pride of being part of this project’s coming to fruition. Please click HERE for ideas on how you can contribute to this amazing project.
Executive Director Evelyn Johnson says of the garden, “We know it will be a point of pride for the community.” Johnson holds the dream that celebrating the memories of our veterans will eventually extend throughout Cave Creek, then return back to the museum’s Veterans Memory Garden.
So, the seed is planted, germinating and sprouting...and, with the love and support of our community, will turn into a beautiful, gathering place for veterans and visitors alike called Veterans Memory Garden.

Carrie Dyrek,
Cave Creek Town Manager

Greetings from the Marshal,
It has been another year and wow how life in our small town has changed. We lost Susan Clancy, a lifelong volunteer and advocate of all things Cave Creek. We had our first Holiday Event at Stagecoach Village (What a great job Patty and all the folks at Stagecoach Village did)! Cowboy Pizza opened at the former Binkley’s location… AMAZING pizza folks, amazing. I heard the Sunday Brunch is notable as well. Let’s be honest, business is booming in Cave Creek thanks in part to how the town is run.
At Town Hall, Michael Baxley our former Building Official, left Cave Creek for a better opportunity, bringing an end to many years of leadership in our building safety department. Michael shall be missed. We brought on the Cave Creek Fire Department and are blessed that Chief Jim Ford came to Cave Creek and has brought such strong and amazing leadership to our small town.
As we begin this New Year, we have a new mayor and some new council members seated. Cave Creek is in good hands in my opinion. Carrie Dyrek, our town manager, continues to make positive changes and continues to move Cave Creek in the right direction with our town council’s support.
Cave Creek is the town we are all so proud of and what makes this town so wonderful are our residents and our businesses. I just want to say “Thank you!” to those of you who support our staff and support our town. Cave Creek is great…because we treat each other as neighbors and we all care about Cave Creek.
Stay safe and Happy New Year.
Marshal Stein

The Happy Hogan
A “hogan” is a traditional Navajo Indian dwelling built of earth walls. At Cave Creek’s Frontier Town, you’ll find an example of a hogan currently operating as an eclectic little shop called the “Happy Hogan” and at its doorway you’ll find friendly proprietor, Andy Rangel.
The Frontier Town hogan dates back to 1982 when it was constructed at a different location on the property by Indians from the Navajo reservation. To be authentic, actual adobe from a local adobe farm was used. For the first two years, Navajo Indians sold their handmade jewelry from the hogan. In 1986, construction of the Black Mountain Brewery was to begin and it was slated for that same location where the hogan stood. To build the brewery and for better hogan visibility, Frontier Town owners Beverly and Julian Peagler hired a crane to relocate the hogan to the front of the property where it now stands.
Wild Bill, of what was then Buffalo Bill’s in Cave Creek, opened Frontier Town’s Happy Hogan as a souvenir shop in its new location. In 1999, Rose Jaramillo purchased the Happy Hogan offering more specialized jewelry and lapidary work. In 2016, when Rose’s health started failing, Rose brought in the assistance of son Andy Rangel and taught him the art of beadwork.
Rose passed away in 2018 but Andy, whose background had been finance, computer science, and restaurant management, embraced the “Happy Hogan” business giving it his own special spin. Andy’s Happy Hogan now offers one-of-a-kind works of 68 local artists, ages 9 – 98, including Native American artists. Andy knows each artist personally, developing a relationship and happily sharing their unique stories to all who enter the hogan.
Andy is also a self-taught lapidarist doing amazing work right there at his shop. He has become expert at helping clients design unique lapidary jewelry set in silver and often incorporates beading. Andy’s creations include necklaces, bracelets, pendants, or anything else a client might request. Andy cuts and polishes each stone himself and then fine-tunes the design to his client’s liking. His work has gained a reputation as being beautiful and flawless with 25% of the Happy Hogan’s business being Andy’s lapidary art.
A visit to the Happy Hogan is always interesting and informative. Whether or not one walks away with a purchase, simply experiencing the hogan, Andy, his work and his stories will surely create sweet memories and a desire to return.

Cowboy Pizza
We live in Cave Creek and couldn't believe there wasn't a good pizza place in the old town area with an offering for delivery, pizza by the slice, late nite after the bars let out... so we decided to open it! (Cowboy Pizza Company)
We grew up ranching in Montana and fell in love with the restaurant industry. Now 30 years in the business we're proud to bring our hospitality and flavors to our own back yard and share our passion with our community! We are humbled to have the opportunity to serve you, from our family to yours!

Kiwanis' sponsored Family Fun Days at the Cave Creek Museum was a free community event where kids learned that Arizona's homesteaders made their own ornaments, greeting cards, wrapping paper and even the gifts they gave. At the event, museum volunteers assisted kids at making their own special ornament. It looks like a fun holiday time was had by all.
