Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Hopedale

1730, Thursday, July 27 2023

Yesterday my email text was long. So, today I am sharing some of Hopedale mostly through a few pictures.

The dominant structure on the Hopedale shoreline is the Moravian Mission. The Moravians came from Germany and introduced Inuit to Christianity starting in the 1770s or before. The other big influence of the era was the Hudson Bay Company. The Inuit used to come here seasonally. The Moravians and the Hudson Bay Company led to Inuit settling here year round for trade and education. Inside the Mission buildings we came across the sign for the old H. B. Co. building. The shoreline here is beautiful with wildflowers in bloom.

We have been enjoying meeting many warm, welcoming and interesting people, of all ages.

There are only about six sled dog teams still kept here, mostly for fun, competition and tradition. We visited a team in their summer quarters just outside town. Some older, retired dogs can be found outside homes. All are beautiful. and, yes, Greg Flowers still puts his dogs on the island off the town for the summer; he does bring them meat on a regular basis to keep them healthy and happy. He cares deeply about his dogs and is the local champion racer.
