Family Engagement is the Secret Sauce

for Strong Attendance!

As you plan for the 2025-26 school year, consider how you can build up the partnership between educators and schools that eroded during the pandemic. Brittany Daley, principal of Hamilton Elementary School, shares how she and her school staff have rebuilt this relationship with families and significantly reduced chronic absence.

Schedule activities that promote positive engagement, relationship building and a sense of community that leaves everyone feeling like school is a place they belong. Find ideas and resources for welcoming students and families back to school in our Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L. toolkit.

The nonprofit Learning Heroes developed a set of recommendations and examples to build a comprehensive family engagement strategy that directly impacts student learning and well-being.

Attendance Tool Spotlight

Communicate with families that your school is prioritizing regular attendance! Integrate information about attendance into outreach sent home before school starts, school registration packets, back-to-school nights or even popped into a child’s backpack to take home.

There is much schools and districts can do to prevent unnecessary health-related absences. Download our handout with strategies that districts, schools and community partners can use to help keep students healthy and avoid unnecessary absences. Share with families our Tips for Staying Healthy.

The School Superintendents Association Professional Learning Series, Beyond the Classroom: Addressing Student Absenteeism in a Shifting Political Climate, featured Attendance Works ED Hedy Chang discussing research showing the impact of immigration-related fears on student attendance, as well as successful district-led initiatives that have helped build trust with families, and the role of community organizations to support a sense of safety at school.

State Research

States are critical to supporting schools and districts still challenged by high levels of chronic absence. Learn how state policy and practice can help, or hinder, efforts to improve student attendance and engagement in our 2025 brief, More Essential Than Ever: States Taking Action to Improve Attendance.

Research Spotlight

A study by Thomas Dee found that unexpected immigration raids in California’s Central Valley led to a 22% increase in daily student absences, with the youngest students most affected. The analysis was based on school attendance data from five districts over three years.

Event Spotlight

In Moving the Needle on Attendance, What’s Working NOW, Attendance Works and leaders from Tulsa Public Schools discussed strategies grounded in family engagement in a free webinar from Education Week and TalkingPoints.

New Training for Districts & Schools

Classes are available this fall in our virtual 3-part training series for district and school leaders and staff. Each class offers proven, evidence-based strategies to engage students and families while promoting regular attendance.

Partner Spotlight

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR) seeks to disrupt generational poverty and ensure more hopeful futures for children of low-income families. We support community-driven initiatives to improve the likelihood that these children will grasp the first rung of the success sequence ladder — graduation from high school.

CGLR has kicked off GLR Week with virtual events from July 28–August 1! Join us on July 30 for a webinar, Reducing Chronic Absence: Promising Signals From Colorado & Virginia.
