Information Technology Makes a Comeback
After facing pressure during July's rotation, Information Technology rebounded 6.19% in August, driven in part by strength in software and continued enthusiasm around AI infrastructure.
Microsoft gained 9.16%, while Nvidia rose 9.98%, with more than half of Nvidia's gain occurring during the final three trading sessions following a strong second-quarter earnings report.
While some mega-cap technology names experienced profit-taking during the month, upward revisions to 2027 earnings expectations and continued demand for AI infrastructure helped restore momentum across the sector.
The takeaway: Investors aren't necessarily abandoning technology, they're becoming more selective about where growth is supported by earnings.
Materials and Healthcare Join the Rally
Two additional sectors outperformed the broader S&P 500:
Materials (+5.82%) benefited from capital expenditure trends tied to the continued buildout of AI data centers, electrical grid upgrades, and domestic manufacturing.
Health Care (+4.78%) also gained momentum, supported by sustained investor inflows and improving intermediate-term performance.
Together, these gains reinforce the broader theme of August: market participation is expanding beyond a handful of mega-cap companies.
