Virtual Summit

Shared Guideways

February 29, 2024

1:00-2:30 PM Central

There's only so much space for single-occupancy, bus, rail, and streetcar vehicles in the urban core. The good news is that our dense urban areas have recently been expanding their transit choices with more modes. The bad news is that limited space makes it impossible for every mode to exist in its own separate space. Therefore, sharing of lanes, guideways, platforms, and other transit facilities is occurring more often.

Sharing can have its benefits and its challenges. In this Virtual Summit, we're going to hear representatives from several streetcar cities discuss the best (and worst) ways to share guideways between transit modes, and some of the lesser-known considerations around sharing (signaling requirements, operator training, and maintenance agreements).

Will the Long-Discussed West 7th Streetcar Project Move Forward in St. Paul?

minnpost.com

A Ramsey County proposal to build a streetcar on West 7th Street in St. Paul is inching toward a milestone.

In the works since 1989, local officials convened by Ramsey County will decide later this year how to move forward with the project, dubbed the Riverview Corridor.

Some West 7th corridor users are balking at the concept, which would cost $2 billion to build. It would be in service by 2033 with a projected weekday ridership of 11,000 by 2040. It would also be at least two minutes slower than the bus route it would replace, the Route 54, which runs between Maplewood and the Mall of America via West 7th Street.

As a result, planners are studying a $121 million option to convert the 54 into a rapid electric bus line instead and on Thursday will present details on the plan.

Omaha Streetcar Authority Hosts Informational Open House

msn.com

The Omaha Streetcar Authority invited community members to the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel on Thursday afternoon to get an up-close look at the latest designs and plans for the Omaha streetcar, and to ask questions about the new mode of transportation through the heart of the city.

“This is the opportunity for the project team to show the public how the design has evolved from the last open house, the 30% design,” said Nick Stadam, a project manager with HDR, the company that’s leading the design of the streetcar.

The design phase is now 60 percent complete, and the biggest changes from the previous streetcar open house ranges.

A bid for the streetcar vehicles has been received by the city, so community members were able to see updated photos of what the car will look like on the inside and out.

Thursday’s meeting also pinpointed exactly where the streetcar will end — for now.

Riverfront Extension for KC Streetcar to Break Ground March 1

msn.com

As the Main Street extension for the KC Streetcar winds down, transportation officials have announced the start of its next project.

KC Streetcar officials announced Thursday afternoon that they will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on March 1 for its Riverfront extension.

The cost of the 0.7-mile extension for the KC Streetcar in the River Market to the Berkley Riverfront is estimated to be $61 million after projection costs were estimated to increase by nearly 75 percent from initial estimates.

The extension is to begin at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market and end near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront. It has been estimated to open to the public in 2025, however, that was when officials believed the project would be underway this year. Those goalposts have been moved back as Streetcar authorities said Tuesday that “active construction should start in early 2024.”

A KC Streetcar spokesperson said on Thursday that a full timeline of the project would be unveiled at the groundbreaking ceremony set to be held at Riverfront Drive and Berkley Plaza.

El Paso Council Delays Public Transit Funding Over Service Usage Concerns

msn.com

Millions of dollars of public money for the city's public transit have been delayed, which will ultimately affect services like the El Paso streetcar and Brio buses.

El Paso’s City Council postponed approval for the funds during its meeting Wednesday, as key questions remain about several projects.

The City Council met Wednesday and debated approval of millions of dollars of spending for El Paso's public transport system.

During the meeting, the Director of Mass Transit Anthony Roger Dekeyzer, answered questions about how he would spend taxpayer dollars.

"What we've done is we've trained ourselves, we have the equipment," said Dekeyzer. "So now in the future, we're going to do this maintenance on the track in-house with our own people, with our own equipment."

Dekeyzer explained why streetcar maintenance jumped by $160,000 this year to approximately $840,000.

He said an expiring federal grant allowed the city to continue track maintenance as they ramp up to do it in-house.
