Diversity in the photo & video industry. Gender matters.

While female consumers are often the primary purchasers of photo or video products, women have historically been underrepresented among startup founders and enterprise executives in our industry.

However, things are changing. Join us Oct. 16-17 in San Francisco at Visual 1st for an engaging discussion in our Diversity in the photo & video industry. Gender matters panel, featuring four trailblazing women who will share their experiences and insights.

Discover how companies can benefit from greater gender diversity, and explore actionable steps we can all take to dismantle the remaining barriers.

In addition to this panel, we also cordially invite all attendees who identify as women or nonbinary to attend our traditional Women in Imaging networking luncheon on the first day of the conference, prior to the start of the program, Oct. 16 at 11:30 am - 1:15 PM.

And a few more things ...

Insta360. Bring on these iPhone videographers. Camera innovation juggernaut Insta360, previous Visual 1st Best of Show Awards winner, is at it again. Why not go after iPhone camera users as well? They just announced their Flow Pro AI tracking stabilizer – the first gimbal which makes use of Apple DockKit for iPhone. Flow Pro takes advantage of DockKit’s sophisticated subject-tracking AI to help cancel out shakes and wobbles for taking smooth shots with the iPhone's native camera app.

Printess. AI-infused print product creation. Printess, last year’s Show & Tell presenter and photo print white label personalization platform, has integrated a set of AI tools in its platform, including GenAI image creation, AI text assistance for greeting cards, AI image background removal, and AI face swapping features.

CIPA. Camera shipments crawling up. The decline of camera sales appears to have bottomed out – not just in terms of $s, as has been the case for a while due to higher prices, but also in terms of units.

According to CIPA more cameras were shipped between January and May 2024 than in the same periods of 2022 or 2023 (all three years are well below the figures achieved before the Covid pandemic). Mirrorless cameras now make up 83.7% of interchangeable lens cameras shipments (DSLRs now being just a fraction of this).

Lightricks. Pivoting to B2B video. Past Visual 1st presenter Lightricks, developer of popular photo & video apps such as Facetune and Videoleap, has concluded that the sky is not the limit for its B2C and SMB creative apps.

Things appear to be plateauing, or at least look pale compared to largely untapped markets such as AI-based systems for the film and video industry – the area the company is now shifting its focus to. Part of that move is laying off 12% of around 600 employees. Back In 2021, when the investment market was hotter, the company completed a fundraising round of $130M at a valuation of $1.9 billion.

Captions. AI video: the hot next thing? Yes, ma'am/sir! AI video creation developer Captions raises $60M, at a valuation of $500M. Of note: new investors include Adobe Ventures. Having started as a solution for enabling users to record and edit “talking videos,” the company recently launched AI Creator, 3D avatars designed for content creation, and AI Edit, where users can watch AI edit their videos in one tap. Captions has around 60 employees.

AgfaPhoto Print. Brand rebirth. Remember Agfa? AgfaPhoto, Helloprint and FastEditor have joined forces under the brand of AgfaPhoto Print to sell B2C photo printing products in Europe. Products include photobooks, personalized photo gifts, and high-quality photo prints.

Meta. Bye-bye “Made with AI” tag – hello “AI info.” After Meta started tagging photos with a “Made with AI” label in May, photographers complained that the social networking company had been applying labels to real photos where they had used some basic AI editing tools.

The company is not changing the underlying technology for detecting use of AI in photos when labeling them.

In other words: if photographers use tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill to remove objects, their photos might still be tagged with the new label. However, Meta hopes that the new label will help people understand that the image with the tag is not always created entirely by AI.

Nodle & Hayden AI. Enforceable traffic violation imagery. Hayden AI, the US market leader in mobile automated bus lane, bus stop, and bike lane enforcement, is partnering with Nodle, aimed at leveraging Nodle’s blockchain authentication technology as additional protection to ensure the integrity of tracking and documenting evidence collection. Expect a ticket when parking in that bike lane! (Nodle will also demo its end-user focused Click app at Visual 1st).
