February, 2022
Greetings!

SUBA had a very busy and successful past year. We continue to work on and advocate for projects that enhance our riding experiences. Click here to read a short summary of many things that happened in 2021.
Bike Trails and Maintenance Projects

Did you know that SUBA has an Infrastructure Committee that is currently monitoring or is involved in planning over 50 local road, trail or maintenance projects? It is incredible all the active transportation infrastructure that is under development locally.

Here are just a few of the many projects that will positively impact our community:

  • Temple Springs Park and Trail (connecting Red Hills Parkway and 700 East) is under construction now.
  • Virgin River Trail: currently wood bridge decking being replaced in sections
  • Banded Hills trail and underpass: construction to start in February to continue this trail to the South.
  • 3000 E widening and trail construction is underway and will continue through the year.
  • Virgin River South Trail: out to bid this month: Bloomington Park to I-15 (will eventually run behind Walmart and connect to the current Virgin River Trail)
  • Zion Corridor Trail from Hurricane to Springdale: Over $14M in funding has been committed to this high priority trail system. The route has been selected and the environmental assessment is underway.
  • Bluff Street bike and pedestrian tunnel (near lower Main Street): after several delays due to material shortages, this tunnel and adjacent trail extensions, will be under construction beginning in June 2022.
  • Separated multi-use paved trail from Veyo to Central has been funded by Washington County and is under design.
  • Widening shoulders on SR-18 between Winchester Hills and the North entrance of Snow Canyon Parkway is underway now.
  • Crossing on 700 East (University): a crossing beacon was recently installed at 700 East and 300 South to make crossing this busy street more safe.

In addition to these projects, the City of St George is now actively recruiting for an Active Transportation Coordinator to focus on the engineering of Active Transportation projects for the City of St. George. Click to learn more about this brand new position and tell your friends!
Show your Support:
Creating a Safe, Family-Friendly Bicycle Network

Last year, hundreds of community leaders urged Governor Cox and the State Legislature to invest in high priority, regionally important “active transportation” (ie. biking and walking) projects throughout the state. They listened and appropriated $35 million towards this effort – an historic investment. This year, you can show your support once again for high priority active transportation projects by encouraging the same decision makers to approve $46 million identified in the Governor’s budget for this purpose. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Volunteers Needed!

Something special is happening this May 7 - St. George and Washington County will be hosting the Ironman World Championships (full-distance)! This is the first time this event has EVER been held any place other than Kona, Hawaii.

This huge event will bring athletes from around the world to St. George. An event this large (second only to Utah hosting the Olympics) requires many volunteers over a 5 day period. Please read descriptions of all the volunteer positions and consider signing up as a volunteer. One area you might consider…Bike Techs…a volunteer position always led by SUBA…requires volunteers with very basic mechanical skills to help riders with minor mechanical issues along the course (mainly flat tires).

This will be a major event for St George and will require all the help and support we can provide. Click HERE to volunteer!

DING!

Trail Courtesy: One of the most frequent complaints we receive is from walkers on our local trails being “surprised” by a speeding cyclists coming up from behind.

As our trails are being used heavily (a good thing!), it is important that we do everything to make it a great experience for ALL users. Announcing yourself well before passing a walker is the best way to avoid these issues. A typical way to do this is in a clear voice say “Good morning!” or some other friendly greeting. Walkers tell us that “On Your Left” is actually sometimes confusing to them…are they supposed to go left?…often all they hear is “left”. This is jargon familiar to most cyclists but not walkers.

All walkers and many cyclists agree, the very best way to signal your passing, is to use a bell. It is friendly sounding, and can be heard from a distance. They are lightweight, inexpensive and can be fitted to any bike. Consider adding one to your bike and see the positive reaction from walkers as you pass…lots of thumbs of ups and thank-you’s.

What is your experience like passing people walking on shared use paths? This fun video might bring a smile to your face. SUBA would like to encourage cyclists, of all types, to slow down and use bike bells to warn walkers you are approaching.
