Address from Pope Leo XIV

“I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world. Peace be with you!

It is the peace of the risen Christ. A peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering. A peace that comes from God, the God who loves us all, unconditionally.

...God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail! All of us are in God’s hands. So, let us move forward, without fear, together, hand in hand with God and with one another other!  We are followers of Christ. Christ goes before us. The world needs his light. Humanity needs him as the bridge that can lead us to God and his love. Help us, one and all, to build bridges through dialogue and encounter, joining together as one people, always at peace."

-Pope Leo XIV

Thank You to Our GiveNOLA Day Donors!

We are thrilled to announce that your GiveNOLA Day donations to the SCAPC Visionary Fund totaled $9145! Our great thanks go out to all who gave. To learn more about the many ministries the Fund supports, visit our Visionary Fund webpage.

Thank You, Tyler & Welcome Back, Caitlin!

Our great thanks go out to Tyler Wheeler for three outstanding years as Young Adults Coordinator for our YAF Group! We send our blessings with Tyler as she begins her work in the admissions office at Newman School this fall.

Meanwhile, we are thrilled to welcome Caitlin Wallace-Rowland to the staff as our new Young Adults Coordinator! Caitlin was previously our Web & Publications Coordinator from 2013-2016 and our Special Publications Coordinator from 2019-2021. She has been working as a fabric designer for Dear Stella fabrics, continuing her painting and ceramics practice, taught as an adjunct art instructor at Southeastern Illinois College, and has had ceramic pieces recently in the Ogden Museum. After a few years back in Illinois with her husband, Andrew, and their daughters, Laurel (7) and Lilla (4), they returned to New Orleans last year. Caitlin writes:

“I’ve been a member of the YAF group for over 10 years and was a founding member of the PINTS group. The people in this community have built and shaped my adult life and my faith in wonderful ways and I’m so grateful for how they have become my New Orleans family. I’m so excited to serve and give back to this group I love so much and help it continue to grow and welcome others!”

Please join us in welcoming her back! She can be reached at caitlin@scapc.org.

All YAF: Join us for our last PINTS of the year tomorrow! Check out the YAF webpage for activities coming up this summer.

Congregational Meeting: New Elder Class

The session has called a congregational meeting to be held this Sunday, May 18 following the 10:30 service in the sanctuary. The purpose is to hear a report from the Nominating Committee presenting the elder class of 2028 slate for congregational approval.

Audubon Park Walking Group

All are invited for a walk in Audubon Park this Sunday, May 18! This is a chance for churchgoers of all ages to share fellowship and exercise in the fresh air together. We will meet at 5 p.m. in front of the Land Building. The group will make one loop around the park and return (approximately one hour).

Evening Mass Gathering at St. Joseph's

Join us this Sunday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. for a special evening at St. Joseph’s Church, 1802 Tulane Avenue. Father Ed Murphy will give us a tour of the historic church and share with us his experience as a Catholic Priest working with the poor in St. Louis, Missouri and New Orleans. It should be a wonderful way to learn about our neighbors, and we’re invited to bring all our questions! Mass will follow at 8:30 p.m. Please email Ashley Brown if you plan to attend. Gated and secure parking is available on site at St. Joseph’s. If you wish to carpool from SCAPC, meet by the side doors on State Street at 7 p.m. Attire is casual. All are welcome.

Living Buddha, Living Christ

Next Wednesday, May 21, at 9:30 a.m. in the Land Building, Dr. Bill Troutt will lead another discussion on the book Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Naht Hanh. We will further dive into Buddhist teachings and how they might sound quite similar to the teachings of Christ! All are welcome.

Congratulations to Our Graduating Seniors!

This Sunday during the 10:30 service, we will extend prayers to our graduating high school seniors for their future endeavors. The Congregational Care Committee will host a brunch for all seniors and their families in the Youth Room at 9:30 a.m.

Broadway Night is May 21! This is our last Wednesday Night Out of the year...come be regaled by our Chancel Choir and soloists! Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in Frampton Fellowship Hall, and the program will begin at 6:30. The cost for dinner is $10/adult, $5/child, and $25/family. Reservations open this Friday and close Monday at 5 p.m. Make yours on the SCAPC app or at scapc.org/wno. You do not need to make reservations if you plan to come to the concert only.

Columbarium Changes

Rising costs suggest that it is time to consider increasing the purchase prices and fees for SCAPC’s columbarium. The columbarium launched in 2012 and still operates with the original pricing structure. Meanwhile, SCAPC’s property insurance cost has tripled, the cost of both urns and engraving have increased over 30%, and maintenance and administrative expenses are much higher. Given this reality, the Session is considering raising prices by 50%. Purchase prices would increase to $3,000.00 for a double niche and $2,000.00 for a single niche. The inurnment fee would be $750.00. We will also begin offering TWO SINGLES for the price of a double ($3,000.00 for two single niches). If approved by Session, these increases will take effect June 1, 2025.  To purchase niches at the current fee structure, please contact Pierce Young (pierce@scapc.org) by May 30.

The Latest at Aden

This month at the Aden Program for Elder Care, we held a Kentucky Derby party, made sandwiches and packed food bags for the homeless and for Raintree Children & Family Services, danced to oldies, enjoyed our regular ukulele player, Jenny Baldwin, and celebrated our mothers!

Aden Looking for Summer Volunteers

Summer is here. Everyone is making summer vacation plans - including among the volunteers in the Aden program. The Aden Program offers fellowship and activities for elders with memory impairment and continues throughout the summer. If you would like to volunteer a few times this summer, please send your information to the director, Marti LeBourgeois McEnery, at marti.l.mce@gmail.com.

Raintree Fun Day

Our thanks go out to all who helped make the Raintree Children & Family Services' "Fun Day" such a success last Saturday morning! Kathy Randall, Sheila Schwartzmann, Lorrie Powel, Jenny Baldwin, and Sarah Chancellor-Watson led jewelry making, Bingo, and other fun activities for the program's 11 residents, while "Grill Masters" Lee Randall and Andy Gallagher (Raintree Operations Manager) served up hamburgers and hot dogs. Among the donations from the Community Ministry Committee, Presbyterian Women, and the SCAPC Cuba ministry were linens, food, and activity supplies. The group was thanked for a fun day that provided a needed lift during the Mother's Day weekend and exam week.

PINTS Celebrates Tyler

The YAF's held a thank-you celebration for Tyler Wheeler last week at PINTS (Presbyterians Imbibing in Necessary Theological Study)!

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Don Charles who died this morning. We will communicate service details when they become available. We also extend our sympathy to Charlotte Hoggatt on the death of her sister, Caroline Nusloch, who died on April 13.
