Welcome new seminarian, Jackie Miller

Hello! I am so glad to be with you at Holy Trinity this academic year. My name is Jackie Miller (she/her), and I am in my second year at LSTC. I grew up in Schererville, Indiana – about an hour southeast of downtown, so I have many fond memories of visiting Chicago. I was raised Roman Catholic. As I began attending my Catholic high school, I wanted to join the Dominican order of sisters that sponsored the school. I was very involved in the music ministry at my church, often playing flute for all three masses each weekend, from the time I was twelve until I left for college.

During my time at Carthage College, I became involved in Lutheran campus ministry and a local ELCA congregation. I first experienced a call to ministry halfway through my sophomore year during a Benedictine morning Liturgy of the Hours that we were doing as part of our Christian Spirituality J-term course. The campus pastor there, Rev. Kara Baylor, completely took me under her wing and is a massive part of why I am in seminary now. I am so glad I got to let her know how my first year was going and how happy I am to be at LSTC before she passed away a few months ago.

I spent the past summer doing CPE at a long-term care facility in Milwaukee, where I was assigned to the memory care unit. I absolutely loved the incredible residents I worked with and seeing how full of life, stories, and love they are. Figuring out how to form relationships and build community among people who tomorrow may not remember me or one another was a challenge but also an amazing experience that pushed me to grow as a leader.

I am very excited for the coming school year – my classes, being a teaching assistant for a new Bible faculty member, hopefully going to Holden Village this January, planning for internship next year, and being at Holy Trinity with all of you. Thank you for having me and being here for so many seminarians!

Donation submissions are LIVE for the 2nd Annual Saturday Soirée

On October 14, we will hold our 2nd Annual Saturday Soirée – a fun evening and silent auction fundraiser that gives our community the opportunity to share talents and experiences: last year included a private sailing excursion, dinner parties, game nights, vacation home getaways, and more.

This year we really want the auction to feature experiences that give our Holy Trinity members more opportunities to get to know each other or meet someone new. What ideas do you have to offer for the auction? What do you enjoy doing that you can invite others to join?

How does God become real to us? - Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

Human beings are built to rely on our senses to determine what is happening around us and what it means for us. We hear thunder and lightning. A stranger smiles at us and says "Good morning!" We decide what to do in response.

HTLC Reparations Team Update:

Over the summer we have continued to have one on one conversations with HTLC members. This work is ongoing and again, if you wish to speak to/sit down with any of us, please let us know! We have also begun to explore HTLC's congregational history; how we came to be where we are, the history of purchases, sales, members, etc. We want to know more about how we came to be as a congregation and that information may inform our reparative efforts going forward. We plan to have information sharing sessions with the congregation in early October, and more in November. More information coming soon! To get in touch, please contact co-leaders Aana Vigen (avigen@luc.edu) and Josh Brown (jbrown2140@gmail.com)

Sunday School/Godly Play begins September 16

Regular worship attendance and participation in faith formation opportunities are essential to a child's (and adult's too) growing in the Christian faith. At HTLC we provide Sunday morning learning opportunities for children and adults. Adult sessions are on Second Sundays and the topics vary. Children aged 4 through 2nd grade are invited to "Godly Play" in the St. Mark's room. Children grades 3-6 meet in the Gathering Space for a Sunday school curriculum based on the scripture readings for the day. Talk to Pr. Sevig for more information.

Confirmation Ministry begins September 10

Each year the Lakeview Lutheran Parish offers an opportunity for youth in 7-8th grades to grow in the faith and prepare for their Affirmation of Baptism. Connect with Pr. Sevig for more information or to sign up for the program.

Youth Gatherings

Yes that's plural! In October the Metro Chicago Synod is hosting a Youth Gathering--Boundless Invitation- at Tinley Park Convention Center for all Chicago area youth October 20-22. It's going to be fabulous! The cost is $175. The ELCA Youth Gathering will be in New Orleans in July 2024. More than 25,000 youth from ELCA congregations will participate in this every third-year event. Amazing! Talk with Pr. Sevig for more info.

More information about upcoming events can be found on our website calendar.

Who do you say that I am? - Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

If we're honest, we are probably more like Peter in his misunderstandings and foibles, than we are like Peter in his proudest moment in today's gospel. Yet Jesus embraces us just as he does Peter.
