Emerald Built Environments to Lead Development of District Sustainability Plan
The process to create a District Sustainability Plan has been launched and will unfold over the next six months. Cleveland-based Emerald Built Environments, founded by 1989 Shaker Heights graduate Laura Steinbrink, will lead the process. The plan will be developed in partnership with the City, facilities master plan project architects and other local partners. Identifying funding opportunities to implement the plan will be a topic of discussion, too.
The District’s Sustainability Plan will include:
- A comprehensive energy analysis and new model for energy management.
- A “Basis of Design” document to guide decision-making for the new Woodbury campus and the renovations of the K-5 buildings.
- An Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) document to guide equipment and materials decisions for the new Woodbury campus and K-5 buildings. This process will establish guidelines for product selection, including product performance characteristics, sustainability goals, health and wellness goals, aesthetics, installation methods, maintenance considerations and initial cost estimating guidelines.
- A LEED Operations & Maintenance (LEED O+M) policy manual for the daily operations of all District facilities.
A broad-based engagement plan will be finalized next week and posted to the Long-Term Facilities Plan website so residents can decide how they would like to be involved. Engagement activities are designed to capture input on a broad spectrum of subjects and practices including, but not limited to, landscape and horticulture, water conservation, irrigation, integrated pest management, water conservation, composting, school meal serving tools and equipment, lighting, indoor air quality (IAQ), green cleaning, solar and alternative energy, energy metering and equipment controls, among others.
Ludlow Construction Updates
Construction on the Ludlow Early Learning Center picked up its pace in January. Selected interior demolition is wrapping up. The building will have significant improvements made over the next few months as the plumbing and electrical infrastructure is replaced, walls are framed, and new heating/cooling equipment is installed. Over the winter the Ludlow Early Learning Center renovation activity will be happening inside. Please check the Long-Term Master Facilities Plan webpage to stay abreast of progress.
Woodbury Campus Site Design Continues to Evolve
Over the next few months, as part of the District’s Long-Term Master Facilities Plan, the Shaker Heights Schools will convene a subcommittee of the Facilities Advisory Committee (FAC) to inventory and review the condition of the District’s indoor athletic spaces and outdoor play fields, clarify scheduling demand for practices and programs, and recommend procedures for the seasonal use of facilities. The subcommittee will complete its work by the end of the school year.
