Minority Leader Resigns, Apartment City USA Updates, Swipe Your SooperCard and Support Springs Taxpayers United, and More!

Here are some of the stories we are following this week. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for up-to-the-minute news.

  • We'd appreciate your help! Springs Taxpayers United is now enrolled with the King Soopers Community Rewards Program. King Soopers Community Rewards makes fundraising easy by donating to local organizations based on your everyday grocery shopping. Once you link your card to Springs Taxpayers United, simply shop at King Soopers and swipe your SooperCard or enter your alternate ID (usually your phone number). This will cost you absolutely nothing and won't impact fuel points. You can just log in to your King Soopers rewards account and designate Springs Taxpayers United (SW470) as the recipient of the community rewards funds from your King Soopers card. Thanks for your support!

  • Colorado republican and House Minority Leader Rose Pugliese has resigned from the legislature. Her resignation statement indicates she is fed up with the animosity and bad faith coming from the radical majority in the legislature. So are we, Ms. Pugliese. So are we.

  • The projected $38 million City of Colorado Springs budget shortfall is forcing nearly 40 jobs to be cut from government agencies. This represents approximately 1% of the current workforce.

  • Since 2021, the number of apartments built in Downtown Colorado Springs has tripled. The rental cost for most of these apartments is higher than average in the city. Is the downtown apartment building boom really about a housing crisis, or is it about something else?

  • Colorado Springs Mayor Mobolade went to Washington, D.C. this week to try to get some clarity on the proposed Space Command move to Alabama.

  • Many people in Colorado Springs installed solar panels on their homes to reduce their utility costs. Now, Colorado Springs Utilities is increasing the utility bills for these folks by $50 per month, negatively impacting their cost savings.

  • Two District 49 staff members are on leave after posting their vigorous approval of the political assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah. Should people who gleefully celebrate political assassinations work in public schools? The celebration of a political assassination is obscene.

  • One city council member in Fountain, Colorado, is being accused of felony theft for stealing around $37,000 from various government programs. At least this theft was noticed before $40,000 went missing, right? The councilmember quickly resigned.

  • There has been more violence on Denver’s light rail system. One man was stabbed recently, and a suspect is in custody. Who would want to force people to ride on dangerous public transportation? Your governor and legislature, that’s who.

  • Crime is still out of control in Denver. Recently, over two dozen vehicles at a Denver Park-N-Ride had their windows smashed, and items were taken from the vehicles. This is an ongoing problem in Denver.

  • Not only is the “free” student lunch program in Colorado collapsing, but now legislators want to raise taxes to fund this program, and also use some of the money to fund SNAP and EBT payments. This program was a scam from the start. If you give them an inch, they will take infinity.

  • Monument voters passed an ordinance that forces all annexations to be approved by voters. Could something like this happen in Colorado Springs?

  • The City of Lamar, Colorado, is encouraging Buc-ee’s to forget about building a location in Palmer Lake and instead build one in Lamar.

  • Monument has cut six government positions and several government programs in order to save money.  The Monument Town Manager states that the public is unlikely to notice these changes. That begs the question: why is the town spending money on things that won’t be noticed if they are eliminated?

  • Denver officials plan to increase their photo radar traffic enforcement. They don’t plan to do this to prevent traffic accidents. They admit they are doing it to raise revenue because they see Denver drivers as an ATM. Denver officials are also anticipating cuts to essential services and will even consider renting out their taxpayer-funded greenhouses. Yes, Denver has taxpayer-supported greenhouses.

  • Denver voters will get the opportunity to repeal the flavored nicotine product ban that is currently in place. Meanwhile, other municipalities are working to pass similar bans. Do we need bureaucrats telling us what products we can and can’t purchase and use?

  • Pueblo city council members are discussing the use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) taxpayer dollars to compensate business owners whose establishments have been vandalized. How about some broken window policing as well?

  • If you would like to help support us in our mission as government watchdogs by becoming a Newsletter Sponsor, we are offering two sponsorships for each weekly newsletter, at the nominal cost of $100 each. Funds raised from these sponsorship opportunities will help us to keep looking out for taxpayers.

Here are some upcoming meetings in the area. We hope you can attend one or more! If there are other public meetings you’d like to see announced here, please drop us a line. We are happy to include them in an upcoming newsletter. These might be government-related, candidate, or elected official meetings. Thanks!

Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Since most of the City and County board and commission meetings are not televised or recorded, we are trying to remedy that. We now have a camera and a tripod for volunteers to check out for future meetings.

If you have a tip about a story in the Pikes Peak region that you aren’t seeing reported, let us know. We will see what we can find out.
