Growing up with a Japanese mother, I've learned a few special concepts that don't translate directly into English. One that has always stayed with me is ikigai—a word for the quiet sense of purpose and fulfillment that gives life meaning.
Ikigai doesn't require grand milestones. It can be found in small joys, daily routines, and simple moments. It can be a warm morning cup of coffee, or familiar tasks like tuning an instrument or mixing colors on a palette. It can also be watching a student step into their confidence on stage, or feeling the quiet hush of an audience leaning in. In my work at MSAC, I find my ikigai in the details: making processes smoother for our staff and applicants, and seeing those positive changes build year over year.
