September Garden
At Beyond Behnke’s we envision a community where gardeners can come to share stories of their successes, ask questions, and get answers. We see a world where gardening and nature can bring people together to celebrate the joy of growing plants.

"Happy September! The world shall now transform into pumpkin everything."
~ Who Knows? Many people say they have said this

Today, Monday, August 29, as I watched my grandchildren get their First Day Of School Photos taken, I took a few of my own to share with you.

My daughter and her family bought my in-law's home next door to my house. My in-laws moved to the other side of my daughter into my husband's grandparent's house. So as you can tell, I am incredibly blessed to have some of my family next door. My son and his family only live about 20 minutes away, and my mother about 10 minutes. So life is good.

While standing by the fence watching the kids drive off this morning, I glanced to my left. Oh my! My beautiful 'Pocomoke' Crape Myrtle that John Reed ("the Cowboy," to those that spent any time in our woody plants department) helped me pick out.

Gardening Basics: Deer Resistant Spring Flowering Bulbs ~Larry Hurley: Horticulturist & Garden Writer
*Larry Hurley did a series of articles for Behnke's called Gardening Basics back in 2009. I wanted to share them with you once again! ~Stephanie
For the urban/suburban gardener, dealing with deer and other warm-blooded garden grazers is generally a case of discouraging their feeding in your garden. You can probably visualize herds of discouraged deer, walking dejectedly down the street, looking for some hosta to terrorize, their little white tails limp. Bad posture and everything. Sooner or later they will feed, it’s just that you are trying to get them to feed elsewhere, maybe on the next street.

September's Gardening
To Do List
Bulbs
  • Buy spring-blooming bulbs as soon as they’re in the stores for the best selection. Select healthy, disease-free bulbs.

  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs this month or next – except for tulips, which should be planted from mid-October through November. Add bone meal or bulb fertilizer into the planting hole as you prepare the soil.

 Wildlife
  • September is when the birds start their winter migration, so it’s a good time to send them off with a full energy source.

Lawns

  • September and October are the best times to feed your lawn, and one application each month is best. (Remember, turfgrasses need 2 pounds of Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet each year to stay thick and relatively weed-free). You can then seed right over the fertilizer.

  • You can also apply lime this month if a soil test indicates it’s needed. Apply after fertilizing but before the ground freezes.

Christian Ulbricht Nutcrackers

Small scale but perfect. A lot of care and love goes in to making good quality products that will last and last. For the past 90 years this principle has underlined the artistry and workmanship at Christian Ulbricht GmbH & Co.

In 1928, Christian Ulbricht‘s father founded the company "Otto Ulbricht‘s workshop for fine wooden crafts and toys“ in the small town Seiffen, in the heart of the Ore Mountains. His success was built on entrepreneurial skills and a remarkable inventiveness. At the height of his career, Otto Ulbricht was awarded at the World Exhibition in Paris with a gold medal for his children’s room clock designs, and a group of Kurrende singers.
Beyond Behnke's Gardening Podcast~ Update From Stephanie
I want to thank each of you that have listened to my Beyond Behnke's Gardening Podcast this past year.

While I enjoyed each of my conversations, the technical side behind the scenes brought me a lot of frustration. At this time in my life, I only want to do something that brings me joy, so I decided to stop the podcasts. I know, I know you loved them! But, those who missed any or all of the episodes are welcomed to listen to them at anytime as they are still on my website.

There are many other wonderful gardening podcasts out there, like Kathy Jentz's GardenDC Podcast, that you can listen to!

For now, I will keep rambling in this email and go to craft shows with all my favorite things ~ Stephanie
