Remembering Lee Robertson

Lee Robertson, affectionately known as “Mr. Western,” passed away on July 3 at the age of 102. Robertson often referred to his 77 years on the Hill as a “love affair” with his alma mater.

A native of Calhoun, Robertson served with the U.S. Army in World War II and came to Western Kentucky State College in 1948 as a student on the GI Bill. He graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education and earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration in 1957.

Robertson served in public schools as a teacher, coach, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Acting Superintendent for 10 years. In 1960, then-President Kelly Thompson brought Robertson back to the University as Director of Alumni Affairs and Placement Services. While Placement Services became a separate office in 1971, he remained Alumni Director until 1985.

Although he retired in 1985, his service to WKU continued, spanning seven decades. Among his many roles were Interim Director of WKU-Glasgow, Head Coach of the Men’s Golf Team and Special Assistant to the Vice President of Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. July 28 at State Street United Methodist Church with a celebration in memory of Lee Robertson to follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Eva & Jim Martens Alumni Center on the WKU campus.
