As an added benefit for Michigan Pet Alliance (MPA) members, the new local advocacy committee launches Wednesday, January 28.
This ad hoc committee will meet virtually on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. to discuss and to strategize how best to tackle animal welfare issues affecting local communities.
| | |
MPA's existing policy and advocacy committee will continue to focus on animal welfare legislative issues at the state level, while this new ad hoc committee will focus on local community advocacy.
The MPA local advocacy committee will provide a venue for members to:
- Discuss, coordinate and strategize animal welfare issues in their communities
- Network and build relationships among members
- Learn from experiences of other members
MPA invites any and all members to join the monthly online meeting by emailing the committee chairs at courtney@michiganpet.org to request the Google Meet link.
In addition to anything new brought to the call, a few potential current local issues up for discussion this month include:
- St Clair County dog killing by sheriff’s deputy
- Farmington Hills outdoor dogs
- St Johns outdoor feeding ban for community cats

Impulse control in dogs is the ability to pause before reacting. It is the mental space between stimulus and response. That pause may be only a second long, but it is powerful. It allows a dog to think rather than to simply react.
In this video, trainer Kelly Kendall from Happy Dog Acres and canine Brave demonstrate the Airplane Game to help teach dogs better impulse control.
