Prince William County is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, with its tributaries feeding into the Potomac River

and eventually the Bay. Many partners cooperate on the vital mission to protect our watershed:

  • Prince William Water manages drinking water and wastewater services for most of Prince William County. We operate the H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility, which treats wastewater for eastern Prince William.

  • Prince William County Government has several important roles, from managing stormwater to overseeing Resource Protection Areas, which include environmentally sensitive land near shorelines.

  • Fairfax Water and the City of Manassas - our wholesale drinking water providers - treat and monitor our water to be sure it meets federal and state regulations.

  • The Upper Occoquan Service Authority treats wastewater to a high quality for western Prince William County and other nearby communities.

Environmental Technicians at Prince William Water play a vital role in ensuring that we consistently meet or exceed all federal and state drinking water regulations - a crucial part of our mission.

Their work protects public health and ensures the water our community relies on is clean and safe. This skilled group collects samples, analyzes and reports regulatory results required for our water distribution system. The Environmental Technicians perform over 7,600 compliance tests per year to ensure our drinking water meets regulations like the Revised Total Coliform Rule, Ground Water Rule, and Lead and Copper Rule. The team is also on hand 24/7 to handle emergency testing for events like sewer overflows or loss of pressure in the system.

The team also runs over 14,000 additional tests annually. These tests are not required by regulation but help us monitor water quality throughout our system and adjust operations, if needed.

"While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it is essential," said Environmental Technician Supervisor Laura Morgan. "Together, we are guardians of water quality, proudly protecting and serving the customers of Prince William Water every day."

One important way Prince William Water protects the Chesapeake Bay is through our H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility in Woodbridge. This facility treats wastewater from homes and businesses in eastern Prince William County before returning it safely to the environment.

The Mooney facility recently earned a major honor: the Platinum 17 Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies. This award recognizes 17 consecutive years of 100% compliance with our discharge permit - fully meeting state and federal clean water standards when water is released from the plant.

That's a rare achievement! Of more than 17,500 publicly owned wastewater treatment plants across the country, only 66 have reached this 17-year milestone. This puts the Mooney facility in the top 1% nationwide.

The high-quality, treated water returned to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed from our Mooney facility has supported measurable improvements in the overall health of the Bay.

Public Health Protector is our super water tester! With cool aqua vision goggles, Protector can zoom in on water and quickly spot any issues. Checking pH and looking for any contaminants that shouldn't be there, she helps keep our water clean and reliable. And Protector has good advice: everyone can help care for our water by keeping trash out of the environment, watching what we put down our drains and staying water wise every day!

We have answers to many questions about water capacity, industrial customers and data centers on our website. You can find FAQs and answers like the one below:

Question: Does Prince William Water plan carefully to ensure we have the drinking water our community needs, now and in the future?

Answer: Water capacity is planned decades in advance and is currently enough to meet future demands through 2050, based on the Prince William County Comprehensive Plan. In addition, when we receive new development proposals, we review projected water needs. If more supply is required, we have the ability to purchase additional capacity from Fairfax Water.

The bottom line: Our customers can feel confident knowing we have a strong, reliable water supply.
