Cabbage Throw Farm
Hakurei Turnips are Back!
|
Cabbage Throw Farm is sad to say the last weeks of summer fruits are upon them. However more fall vegetables are returning including Hakurei turnips and baby greens. It may only be two more weeks of heirloom tomatoes so make sure to stop by the tent to get your fix for the season. It’s time to can, freeze, or enjoy fresh in one more summer salad. Green beans, eggplant, herbs, cooking greens, lettuce, spring mix and more will be available this weekend.
Recipe of the week:
Corn and Tomato Salad
Cut corn off the cob and toss with diced tomatoes, bell pepper, green olives, crumbled feta and basil.

And everybody's favorite apples are here - hello Honeycrisp! And Gala too.
On the veggie side you'll find beefsteak tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes (buk available for canning), string beans, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, cukes, eggplant peppers, onions and more!.

Holy Cow Farm
Why Buy Local?
|
Did you know that 80% of the cut flowers sold in the US are imported? Most of our imported flowers come from Colombia and Ecuador, but also from Holland and Canada. Since 1992, more than half of US flower farms have gone out of business due to these low-cost imports. It's tough for small businesses like Holy Cow Farm to compete with this global market, but it's thanks to shoppers like you that smaller-scale local flower farms are making a comeback in this country. When you choose to buy flowers from local farmers you are supporting your local economy, preserving local farmland, generating a smaller transportation footprint, and encouraging more sustainable growing practices. Plus, your flowers will be healthier and last longer because they haven't had to endure such a long journey to your table. Thanks for shopping local!

The Backyard Growers
Digging for Gold
|
Today I went on a "treasure hunt"! Time to dig the Russian fingerling potatoes. It does take some time to dig each of the plants in a 40' row. A fork is used to loosen the ground where the plant was growing; next you carefully rack the potatoes from the loosen clump of soil, pick them and place into a basket. Once in a while a potato is "stuck" by the fork. So if a small scrap is spotted on a fingering, I missed culling it! Other fingering varieties will be harvested in the next few weeks.

Pie+Tart
Signs of Fall...
Apple Brown Butter Tarts
|
Pot Pies are selling well, so Lisa has added to the roster with a Cock-a-Leekie Pot Pie, full of chicken, leeks from Phillips Farms, and bacon. Sooo delicious and deliciously easy to reheat. Aussie Dinner Pies, and Artichoke Strudels are available, too. Almond Frangipane comes back with either apples and Dulce de Leche, or lovely brandy soaked apricots. The last of the peaches join with Lisa's own blackberries and ginger in a double crust pie, or, for the purists, our own deep dish Key Lime Pie. And don't forget to add a Pint o' whip! So masks on, and smiling even if no one can see it, we'll see you Saturday down by the river.

Teels Hill Soapworks
Susan's Favorite Soaps
|
Here are some of my favorite go to soaps. I am never without my Poison Ivy soap. In fact I made my annual batch this week from my patch of Jewelweed that now grows in my backyard. Working hands is my go to bar in the soap kitchen. This soap has sweet orange essential oil which is also a grease cutter. My Aloe Vera soap has aloe vera and comfrey for their soothing properties. Then it is scented like my Deep Muscle Rub body massage oil. So it delivers some warmth while soothing tired achy muscles.
