Fostering a just peace in Israel and Palestine through education

June 2024

Message from the Executive Director

Dear friend,

My time in Palestine and Israel feels like a dream after several weeks back in the US. But I prepared this report about my visits with each Peace Partner (excluding the Gaza Water Project, for obvious reasons). Feel free to have a look to find a more in depth summary of each peace partner and my reflections following my visit.

In my report you’ll read about the financial challenges facing Mar Elias — this entire school year has been met with a 45% reduction (more than we previously understood) of fees from the Ministry of Education from previous years’ payments. As a result, there is enormous pressure on the Amuta, the governing body for the school, to address the shortfall so that they can continue to provide an exceptional education to bright, motivated, and ambitious Palestinian Israeli youth. There are no other options for an equivalent educational opportunity for Palestinian students in the entire country.

For this reason, we are asking your support for scholarships — I’ll go into more detail in the newsletter below.

I also wanted to share with you that Pilgrims' board members meet weekly, planning for Abuna Chacour’s visit in October this year. We are close to finalizing the schedule that will include a number of open-to-the-public events and invite you to consider attending these, if you are able. If you are not able to travel to the locations where Abuna will present we will offer live-streaming links so that you can watch from afar. I’ll include those details that we have in place in the next e-newsletter.

Thank you as always for your support and your desire to help out in this time of great need.

Many blessings,

Essrea Cherin

Emergency Appeal from Abuna Chacour

Dear Beloved friends,

I wonder if I am allowed to make an appeal which is more like an S.O.S.; I am not used to issue such appeals.

The Mar Elias Educational Institutions is overwhelmed with the financial situation, resulting from the sudden drastic cuts of the small subsidies which we used to receive from the Ministry of Education.

The reason is financing the ongoing war in Gaza. We used to receive 70% of what the governmental schools enjoy every month. With the new drastic cuts our subsidies became 35%, which handicaps us. It's a problem of paying the salaries of our 200 staff members.

The association "Amuta" took drastic measures of imposing on the parents 300 NIS more per year. Likewise, they limited to the minimum the important daily expenses and were able to reduce the deficit to about 30%, but still there is a deficit from September 2023 to May 2024, amounting to over Three Million Shekels.

We are contemplating to take a bank loan, but for the association it's legally impossible. That would impose on us the interest on the loan. We hesitate seriously in taking this step, since we need to insure paying the loan back to the bank plus the interest.

I call on you since you were always our refuge and our supporters. Indeed, I am embarrassed to ask you for such help, but we need to overcome our shyness.

We hope that soon the war would end and peace would come back in order to be reestablished. The situation has been aggravated with the closure of the country, no tourism, no visits from abroad which bring very little if any additional income to cover the deficit.

I dare leave all that to your care, to your possibilities, and to your generosity. Any contribution would be highly appreciated.

Yours Fraternally,

Abuna Elias Chacour

MEEI: Scholarship Funds Needed Now

Along the lines of Abuna Chacour's emergency appeal we just received a request for scholarship funds for elementary and junior high school students at Mar Elias Educational Institutions (MEEI) for $27,500.

Since October financial hardships have ballooned for Palestinian Israeli families and many face financial challenges that threaten their children's education. To address this, MEEI has identified 128 students in need of scholarships — 68 in Elementary School (grades 1-6) and 60 in Junior High (grades 7-8).

A significant percentage of scholarship recipients are outstanding female students from various villages. We believe that supporting these students is crucial for promoting gender equality and empowering future leaders.

With your support, we can offer these worthy students high-quality education that provides opportunities for success in the future that we hope will bring long-term benefits to their families.

MEEI Exceptional Students

Despite facing numerous challenges in the first semester, including disruptions caused by war and having to shift to online learning via Zoom, the Mar Elias High School students achieved outstanding results in their matriculation exams.

An impressive 92% of the students passed these demanding tests. The students of MEEI have consistently achieved impressive scores on the psychometric exam, the primary exam for admission to Israeli universities. This round has produced remarkable results, with the highest score being 773 (the maximum score in this exam is 800). These outstanding grades will enable MEEI graduates to enroll in the top Israeli universities, such as the Technion in Haifa and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Elias A.G., the High school principal, adds, "This success is mainly attributable to the faculty, who dedicated significant effort and time to support the students' achievements. Their resilience and dedication under difficult circumstances highlight the strong community and educational support at Mar Elias High School.”

Mabrook to all the seniors graduating this year

we wish you much success in your future!

MEEI Update: World of Computing Summit

Maryam Bawardi Elementary School participated in the summit for the world of computing "Journey to the Future".

The school was selected among the few schools in the Northern District to participate in this event.

Our students, Laurence Azzam, Qasim Abub, Lur Khaled, and Tony Rashid, distinguished themselves in presenting their project to develop a robotic medication station for the visually impaired, under the supervision and guidance of the school's computing coordinator, Mr. Camille Elias.

Attendees praised the students' high level of thinking and the excellence of the work.

We are proud of our creative students, the school team overseeing the project, and the pioneering administration.

MEEI Update: Escape Room

Ms. Olla Salem, an environmental science teacher, artist, and calligrapher has built a unique experience for her students in the world of education: an escape room themed around global warming for students, in collaboration with Dr. Fadi Sakran.

The room's purpose is to explain environmental concepts engagingly and entertainingly. This experience is not just a game but an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment. Ms. Salem has invited all students to try out the escape room to motivate and capture their interest in environmental issues and global warming innovatively and interactively.

The escape room aims to achieve several educational and awareness goals, including:

  • Increasing environmental awareness and enhancing the understanding of students and teachers about the importance of ecological issues and the impacts of global warming and climate change.
  • Providing an interactive environment that allows students to apply their analytical and critical thinking skills to solve environmental puzzles and problems.
  • Encouraging teamwork and fostering collaboration and cooperation among students and teachers through challenges that require combined efforts and effective communication.
  • Inspiring innovation and sustainability by encouraging using recycled and upcycled materials to create innovative and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.

Sustainable and up-cycled materials were used to promote recycling and environmental sustainability. These materials include:

  • Recycled garbage: Using plastic bottles, cardboard, and old electronic parts collected from waste and recycled to form the puzzles and necessary tools.
  • Up-cycled materials: Utilizing natural and household materials that can be reused, such as glass bottles, old fabrics, and metal can lids.
  • Recycled wood: Using old wooden pieces collected and renewed to form parts of the room decor and wooden puzzles.

The escape room targets all educational levels, with participation from students in grades nine to twelve. This allows all age groups to engage in an interactive and diverse educational experience.

The escape room also allows a wide range of teachers, especially environmental science teachers from different schools, to participate. The benefits can include:

  • Sharing educational experiences and enhancing cooperation among teachers by exchanging ideas and effective teaching methods in environmental education.
  • Practical training provides a hands-on educational experience for teachers to help them develop similar interactive classroom activities.
  • Stimulating innovation in teaching, inspiring teachers to use innovative teaching methods to raise students' awareness of environmental issues.

By organizing this escape room, Ms. Salem aims to create an integrated educational environment that encourages interaction, innovation, and environmental sustainability, contributing to a generation aware of the importance of preserving our planet.

MEEI Exceptional Students

Ms. Ola Salem offers a success story:

“After 12 years of dedication to teaching special education classes, I have an inspiring success story that attests to the importance of perseverance and hard work in achieving positive change.

When I started working with these classes, I faced significant challenges in dealing with students who had learning difficulties and behavioral challenges. These students needed exceptional support and continuous guidance to reach their full potential.

This began my journey in building a supportive and inclusive educational environment.

Initially, I focused on understanding the individual needs of each student and developing customized educational plans that suited their specific needs. I worked on enhancing their self-confidence and motivating them to overcome challenges by providing emotional and educational support.

Among the standout students was a girl who suffered from severe learning difficulties. In addition, she struggled with severe depression and was on the verge of suicide.

Thanks to the joint efforts between the school and intensive psychological support, she significantly improved her grades, becoming one of the top students in her class. Today, this student is studying at university and aspires to become an engineer.”
