19th Sunday After Pentecost

Perhaps the church, at its best, is “all ears.” God urges the faithful, again and again, to “listen up!”—to heed the word that gives life. So it was with Abraham and Sarah, Mary and Martha, and the early church at Colossae. So it is today as we join the assembly to hear the word of God, the word of life.

Devotional for the Week | from Sundays and Seasons

Jesus, Cornerstone of Our Faith

God has showered humanity with gifts and blessings, but humanity continues to abuse those gifts. We have been entrusted with a creation to care for, and in our shortsightedness we abuse and pollute the earth, even bringing about the extinction of entire species. We have been given the ability to create so many wonderful things, and even this gift we abuse as we gather and keep as much as we can for ourselves.

This is nothing new. Even in the days of Isaiah it was clear the people turned away from God’s gifts. God expected righteousness and justice. Instead the people responded with bloodshed and suffering, turning away from God.

Even if you can think of all the ways you have not turned from God and all the ways you have been faithful, it does no good. As Paul reminds us in the reading from Philippians, “Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ” (Phil. 3:7). Even all of Paul’s good and faithful acts add up to nothing. For Paul, and for us, all that matters is Jesus.

As Christ himself reminds us, he is our rock, our cornerstone. Jesus is the foundation for our faith and the foundation for our lives. Even as we turn from Jesus, even as we reject Jesus, he returns to us with love and forgiveness. This is the grace of God, the love of God coming into our world and into our lives. To our joy we discover the open arms of Jesus on the cross, bringing life into this world even where there is death; bringing hope where there is despair; and bringing resurrection to all creation.

Endowment Fund Check Presentations

Immediately following the morning service on October 4th we will have Endowment Fund check presentations to Kokomo Urban Outreach and Samaritan Caregivers. The Endowment Fund is a CLC stock market account that maintains a base level investment of actual money given, but from which dividends are periodically disbursed to selected charities. Since we have not had dividend disbursements in the last few years and the markets have performed well, we are able to donate a $10,000 check to Kokomo Urban Outreach and a $4,000 check to Samaritan Caregivers as recommended by the Finance Committee and approved by the Church Council.

Jamey Henderson of Samaritan Caregivers will be with us to receive the check for her organization and explain a bit about what Caregivers does for the Kokomo community. You are probably aware that our own Office Administrator Rebekah G. also manages the Medicare Counseling service of Samaritan Caregivers functioning out of the northeast wing of our building. So obviously we are already supporting Caregivers through their utilizing our building spaces and utilities. It is nice that now we are in a position to do more financially, plus Jamey will give us insight into how we could participate more from an individual volunteer perspective. Find out more at www.samaritancaregivers.org

Kokomo Urban Outreach will be represented by Jeff Newton. Jeff is the inspiration behind KUO which works with kids you might think as disadvantaged, but in Jeff’s eyes are kids just waiting to have their innate potential taped. KUO’s philosophy focuses on empowering kids to acquire the tools to function well as they grow into adult society. You will be amazed at the range of programs and activities KUO offers kids and you can get a sneak peek at what Jeff will share with us at www.kokomourbanoutreach.org

Of course coffee and cookies will be available so you can munch while questioning Jamey and Jeff about volunteer opportunities. If you have questions talk to Jan Harmeyer and Judie McCoy who interacted with Jamey and Jeff in planning this check presentation event. (And they have volunteer forms!!)

Communion Change

Please note that for those who do not wish to drink wine, we will serve fruit juice in the communion glasses instead of nonalcoholic wine.

Advantages of Online Giving

Have you considered the online giving option? Here are some of the advantages:

Advantages of Vanco Electronic Giving:

  1. No paper envelopes and checks to be processed.
  2. Giving is much more private.
  3. Minimizes Sunday morning counting and bank trips.
  4. Florida snowbirds don’t have to send physical checks in the mail.
  5. Credit/Debit cards are a second option to direct bank-to-bank transactions if desired.
  6. Specialized giving such as ‘Furnace Fund’ can be easily set up to avoid the hassle of separate checks or cash for miscellaneous giving.
  7. You have complete control of starting/stopping/changing as you wish.
  8. A history of your giving is directly available through the Vanco app without having to check with the Financial Secretary.
  9. Money is transferred to our church checking account in a matter of 1-2 days rather than a week or two after the fact.

If you are ready to make the change from paper, please speak with Jerre Fercho or Bob Howell. They will be happy to talk with you about the advantages and get you set up!

We thank everyone for what has been given to date and appreciate all efforts made to stay current.

Thank you!
