The Beatles Said It Best: “Help.” Why Don’t Judges and Lawyers Get It???
Why is it so difficult for legal professionals to ask for help? In this thought-provoking article, Briggs Cheney explores the cultural, professional and personal barriers that often prevent lawyers and judges from seeking support when they need it most. Drawing from his own experiences, Cheney examines the pressures of the legal profession, the misconceptions surrounding vulnerability and self-care and the importance of letting go of the expectation that lawyers must always have the answers.
The article offers practical insights on well-being, resilience and professional sustainability, while encouraging legal professionals to rethink what strength truly looks like in the practice of law.
Read the full article and discover why asking for help may be one of the most important skills a lawyer can develop.

Credibility Matters
One of the things that impressed me most during my years on the bench was not necessarily an attorney's legal brilliance, but their ability to remain calm, professional and solution-focused during difficult moments. The attorneys who built lasting credibility with the court were often those who could disagree respectfully, advocate passionately and still maintain professionalism. Over time, that reputation became one of their greatest assets. What professional competency would you most like to strengthen this year?

The Equity in Justice Book Club is Back with Another Chance to Read Together!
From Amazon: Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Isabel Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity.
Moderated by:
Dr. Amanda Parker, Equity in Justice Program Director of the State Bar of New Mexico
Torri Jacobus, Director of Statewide Equity, Inclusion, and Justice of the New Mexico Courts
Aja Brooks, Statewide Rural Justice Program Coordinator for the Administrative Office of the Courts.
Meetings: Online from noon - 1 p.m. (MT)
Upcoming Dates: July 1, July 15, July 29, August 19
